About the Author
Jean-Pierre Danthine is professor of economics and finance at the University of Lausanne Switzerland), director of the International Center for Financial Asset Management and Engineering Lausanne & Geneva) and CEPR Research Fellow. The holder of a Ph.D. in economics from Carnegie-Mellon University and a M.S. in Economics from the University of Louvain, Professor DanthineI previously taught at at Columbia University and held visiting appointments at CUNY Graduate Center, University of Southern California (Los Angeles), Universit� d'Aix-Marseille, Universit� Laval (Qu�bec), as well as Universities of Toulon and Dijon.
He is an Associate Editor of Macroeconomic Dynamics and Finance Research Letters; Chairman of the Scientific Council of the TCIP (Training Center for Investment Professionals); member of the Council of the European Economic Association, of the Scientific Councils of CEPREMAP (Paris), CREST (Paris), CREI (U. Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona) as well as the Fonds national de la recherche scientifique (Economics Commission - Belgium). He was also a member of the Executive Committee of the ICMB (Geneva).

A fabulous book

This is a wonderful, tasteful book about how babies are made (conceived, developed in utero, and born). Each page presents a child asking a question (e.g. "Where did I come from?", "How did I get into your tummy?", "How did the sperm get from Dad to you?", "When did I start to look like a baby?", "Could you feel me moving inside you?", "How did you know when I was ready to be born?", etc.) and a parent, sometimes a mom and sometimes a dad, answering the question with concise, tasteful, correct and easily understood words. As you can see from the picture of the cover, the book is done in bright primary colors and uses very sweet illustrations that you and your kids are sure to love. I really appreciated that the children and parents in this book come in different skin tones and don't look a bit dated (the book was published in 2004). I bought this book after a lot of research on the web, conducted frantically on the night of my son's sixth birthday, just after he asked me ALL the questions that I was not at all prepared to answer. We leave this book out in our room and read it when the kids ask us to do so. Our four-year old daughter is very interested in it, more so than our son. For now though, I do skip over the pages that deal specifically with sperm, eggs and private parts. She loves the book any way and is fine when I tell her I'll read her the rest of the pages when she's a bit older. I've read the whole thing to my son since he has asked lots of very detailed questions. I would highly recommend buying this book BEFORE your kids start asking questions though if you, like me, have already been grilled on how babies are made, this is a great book. For now this book is only available from the U.K. but it is definitely worth the extra shipping and wait time. It help that the book is very reasonably priced.

The strength of this book is that it is accurate, detailed, but most important: age appropriate for probably age 4 - 10. Some children's books on this topic gloss over conception in an unrealistic way. However, this one does a good job. The only thing wrong is that it states a baby grows in the Mom's "tummy." I crossed that out with pencil and wrote "uterus," in the copy I bought for my children. For the rest of the book however, correct terminology is used.

I recommend this title for primary schools, because even though it looks like a picture book for younger children, it would be perfect even for 10 - 12 year olds as well. Older children could be asked (after studying a unit on human reproduction) "what is wrong in this book?" They should be old enough to know babies grow in the uterus, not the stomach. Highly recommended.

An excellent book which in a simple and concise way explains where babies come from.
Only note of imprecision is still using the childs idea that the baby is in some way connected to the tummy.
Though this is often a childs response since the stomach is much higher in the body than they realise.
Despite that well worth the cost and the colourful pages add interest.

She is on the Advisory Board for Cynology College. Nicole is an internationally recognized author. Her books include Living with Wolfdogs, Wolfdogs A-Z, So You Want to be a Dog Trainer, It’s Not the Dogs, It’s the People! and One on One: A Dog Trainer’s Guide to Private Training. She writes training and behavior articles for various newspapers and magazines including Modern Dog Magazine. Nicole co-stars in the DVD “Train Your Dog: The Positive Gentle Method,” and appears in the Paul Owens DVD "The Dog Whisperer: Compassionate, Non-Violent Dog Training." Realistic advice, helpful information, great resources

Nicole Wilde has generously shared her advice for those who have considered becoming dog trainers. The book doesn't just gloss over general information, but gives enough detail to help you know if it's really what you want to do, and to get you started on the right path if you do decide to go ahead. She covers the business aspect of dog training as well as what it's like to deal with the dogs and their people. Most importantly, she includes information about the kinds of things dog trainers are expected to handle that most people haven't even thought of - it's not just teaching someone's dog to "sit," "stay," and "shake." She provides resources for education so that you know what you need to learn and where to find that education. Nicole Wilde books are some of the most useful books about dogs that I've ever read. Her style is easy to read and warm, as well. If you are even considering being a dog trainer in your wildest dreams, read this book first.

The BEST book I've read on becoming a dog trainer

When I decided to become a dog trainer, I had so many questions. Do I need to be certified? What type of school should I go too? Where can I connect with other trainers? What books should I read? What methods should I avoid? How should I market myself? And most importantly - WHERE DO I START?!

This book was helpful in answering all of these questions plus more. It also gave advice and suggestions for things I hadn't even thought of yet. It also has a lengthy resource section which has been extremely helpful for me and other newbie trainers.

If you're looking to get into the business, this is an excellent place to get your start. The information contained here are invaluable and will get you on your feet - just like it did for me! I highly recommend it to anyone who's considering a career as a dog trainer.

A Must Read!!!

I purchased this book a while ago, when I read it the first time I thought it was good. Then I read it again after I gained more knowledge as a trainer and became more interested in wanting to pursue a dog training business and I found it to be GREAT. The author goes above and beyond to help those of us who want to be trainers and start a business. It is not a book to teach you to train dogs, however, there are a lot of resources and information on that as well. I live in an area where trainers are so afraid of competition that they are not willing to help you with any form of guidance. The author shares some of her experiences, what worked for her, what didn't work, and gives you guidance on what to expect in the "real world" as well as what organizations to contact to get even more information. I hope this helps :-)

Good Supplemental Review

As the author has indicated, this book is best used as an accompaniment to the actual APCS course in school. I had hoped that this book would give my son a jumpstart over the summer before he begins the actual course in the Fall. It contains good information with plenty of sample coding. However, it does reference programming terms (e.g., OOP, compiler, boolean) that a beginner would not necessarily grasp easily if used as a self-study guide. Given my own programming background, I am able to elaborate on key concepts as needed to help develop his comprehension. I can see why the previous version of this book received high marks from tutors and teachers. Unless you have some programming background, I would not recommend this book as a self-study guide.

As an AP Computer Science teacher, I use the Be Prepared book as a comprehensive review in March and April for the AP Exam in May. After taking the preliminary exam, students identify the topics they need to study and review. The highlighted "what you need to know" notes, practice problems and practice exams are excellent and provide the background for lively discussions on the AP topics. During the year, we use the Java Methods textbook and this is a fine companion.
