A rather unknown form, the Tracking Stock, will also be mentioned and explained. They all added a new dimension to the corporate landscape. Typically, the corporation's aims of restructuring are to create shareholder value. In the last two decades, the tendency was to strengthen the focus on its core businesses and becoming more and more a 'pure player' in its extreme form. The potential of divestiture activities during the next years will still be very high, if one imagines that only in Germany the 30 DAX companies own around 4.500 subsidiaries. One particularly interesting alteration of firm boundaries involves a parent firm partially divesting its ownership stake in a subsidiary via an Equity Carve-out. Equity Carve-outs have become widely known tools for corporations that shed divisions, which are no longer part of their core business. Especially during the last years high growth segments with tremendous potential could be unlocked through this form of divestiture. Are You Creating a Real Sense of Urgency in Your Ministry Setting?

John Kotter is author of the now classic business book, Leading Change, published in 1996 and still a bestseller. In that previous book he suggested eight steps in leading change. The first of these was to develop a sense of urgency.

As a follow-up Kotter has written A Sense of Urgency. In this 2008 book he clearly makes his point in the six page preface and the first three chapters that take up 61 of the 196 total pages of primary text. That is all you need to read to benefit from his VIP's [short for very important points].

Here are some of the VIP's:

*The single biggest error people make when they try to craft change is they do not "create a high enough sense of urgency among enough people to set the stage for making a challenging leap into some new direction." [viii]
*Our biggest challenge is complacency. "We underestimate its power and its prevalence." [4]
*Our second biggest challenge is a false sense of urgency. "A false sense of urgency is pervasive and insidious because people mistake activity for productivity." [9]
*To increase a true sense of urgency, "create action that is exceptionally alert, externally oriented, relentlessly aimed at winning, making some progress each and every day, and constantly purging low value-added activities--all by always focusing on the heart and not just the mind. [60]

About the Author
Born in 1968, Giovanni Simeone grew up to study photography in Milan, Italy. In the early nineties he worked in Germany for a photo agency and traveled for almost three years around the world before moving to Paris to start shooting as an exclusively contracted photographer for "Le Figaro"magazine, producing more than fifty stories for that publication. After this incredible experience, Giovanni founded his photo agency, Simephoto (www.simephoto.com), driving a group of 50 of among the best landscape and travel photographers in Europe. Giovanni's portfolio includes clients such as "The National Geographic Traveler," "Le Figaro," "Outside," "Geo Germany," "Stern," "la Republicca," "The Sunday Times," and "The Guardian." In 2011, Giovanni founded a publishing house (www.simebooks.com) dedicated to creating books with new imagery and new atmospheres. His latest book, "Not Food for Old Men: A Mexican Culinary Adventure," reached the top ten in four different categories on Amazon.com. Giovanni currently lives in Italy and Los Angeles; and just south of the latter he discovered a land where photographers have so far missed out on an ample supply of shooting opportunities: Baja California.

No book for Baja chefs

Baja is a fascinating part of Mexico, with stark scenery, amazing and unique food, and incredible stories. I spent an amazing month there doing field research on biogeography years ago, and it imprinted itself on me. I was excited to see this book's wonderful photos and visual style, which captures Baja beautifully, but highly disappointed in its inclusion of irrelevant non-Baja material, and its vague, often catastrophically erroneous, frustrating recipes.

Even a preliminary review of the recipes betrays some very significant flaws - one recommends roasting meat for four hours at 660F, a temperature not only totally inappropriate for anything short of a Neapolitan pizza but also one unreachable by most home ovens. Others specify ingredients that are simply not available in the US, like shredded venison and manta ray. Most instructions are extremely cursory and bear the hallmarks of a poor translation from Spanish - one would have to be an experienced cook to fill in the blanks and recognize the mistakes and flaws.

Also, there's numerous recipes included that are either generically pan-Mexican or rooted in regions other than Baja, such as cochinita pibil and mole Poblano. And many features of the local cuisine, like the fascinating Baja-Mediterranean fusion cuisine of Tijuana and Ensenada, are not extensively discussed.

It's really a shame - this is a terrible cookbook about a fascinating part of Mexico that's underrepresented in the cooking literature. Wish it were higher quality and better researched and written. It's gorgeously photographed and manages to convey the rugged, sea-and-desert purity of Baja, and the recipes that are authentically Californian are interesting in concept. But that's not enough.

It is noteworthy that many of the reviews of this book are both very positive and extremely vague, posted by "Amazon Reviewers" with no other reviews written and no profile. I don't want to indulge in conspiracy theories, but I get suspicious when I see reviews that gush but provide no substantive details.

One of the most beautiful books I have ever read. The recipes are wonderful, but the aesthetics and photography make this the perfect coffee table book as well.

This DEFINES Value

For a brief book this title summarizes very well topics which the larger books tend to present in academically interesting ways but which tax the limited time of busy clinicians who just need quick refreshers. Likewise, this book presents relevant clinical material often missed by the pocket books. Eg., transfusion practices and the "electronic" crossmatch; current perioperative fluid strategies (restricted volume); LR for CKD patients w/ slightly elevated K, etc. Well worth the price. Ordered paper AND Kindle versions.

Good primer

This is an excellent primer for family medicine residents and medical students doing work in anesthesia. This primer is aimed at this generation of learner. About the Author
Karen E. Woodin earned her M.S. in Applied Statistics at Western Michigan University and her Ph.D. in Epidemiology from the School of Public Health at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Dr. Woodin has over 30 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, including more than 20 years at The Upjohn Company/Pharmacia (now part of Pfizer), where she worked in the areas of biostatistics, clinical trial operations and monitoring and drug safety. She currently works as an independent consultant specializing in clinical trial operations, good clinical practices (GCPs) and standard operating procedures (SOPs). She works with investigative sites, sponsors and IRBs, and also develops and teaches courses in these areas. She is the author of The CRA's Guide to Monitoring Clinical Research, also published by CenterWatch. Dr. Woodin is a long-time member of the Drug Information Association (DIA) and has served on the DIA board of directors and as chair of the Steering Committee for the Americas. She has also developed and taught courses for DIA. She is a recipient of the DIA Outstanding Service award.

Excellent resource

I've been working as a Clinical Study Coordinator for 3 years now and I thought I might know a lot the information in here already, and some I did, but much I didn't. Or I knew the surface of a topic but this gave me a WAY deeper understanding of the subject. Also, this has an invaluable part about FDA audits and they have sample forms and checklists in the back which I love. Plus there are a lot of organizations and websites referenced that after years of doing searches to find research info I'd never come across. I love this book!

Not worth the money, other more helpful resources that are more cost efficient on the market

I was kind of disappointed as I ordered the Monitoring Book (CRA's guide) and found that more helpful. This book has about half of the information that is useful. The other half are regulations that you can get anywhere else for free. Kind of pricey just to have this information in one resource. I would not have ordered this had I known this beforehand.
