New to Python, not new to programming

I'm an experienced programmer new to Python and finally I have an introduction that is helping me become a more "real" Python programmer. Though I don't need to start from the beginning, it's useful to have the slate clean, as opposed to jumping into the middle with more advanced books. Also, since this book takes a "crash course" approach, it covers a bit of many different approaches: from pure command line to visualizations to web apps. This book has been valuable to me as a coder who happens to be a Python newb, but I'm also looking forward to recommending it as a first programming book, as well.

Wow... An amazing intro to Python...

I have read multiple beginner guides to Python. I am currently up to chapter 11 in Python Crash Course. So far this is far and away my favorite Python programming book. The content is comprehensive, well-explained and well-curated. I only have one complaint and it is minor. The indentation on the online Kindle version is occasionally off. As a workaround, the author consistently points out where indentation is needed. Or you could stick with the paperback edition. On a side note, the age range states 10 and up. It may be a tad ambitious for a 10 year old. Especially since it covers topics such as Django.

I'll write again if my views change after having tackled the projects section. For now I recommend this book whole-heartedly. It is fantastic.

Outstanding Book - Worth the Long Wait

This book is well written for beginners explaining concepts in plain language where others defer to technical jargon too early. I have at least 8 Python books and have trouble reading more than a few pages before checking out. With this one I find I can absorb the concepts easier and tend to keep at it longer. I wish Eric would write a similar book on wxpython - a subject in deep need of addressing for the early learners. Default GUI tools inside Python are simply not what I expected in terms of ease of use and quality.

About the Author
Bert Rosenbloom earned his Ph.D. at Temple University. He currently is a professor of marketing and Rauth Chair in Electronic Commerce in the LeBow College of Business, Drexel University, and editor of the Journal of Marketing Channels. He has served on the editorial boards of several publications including the Journal of Consumer Marketing, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, and Journal of International Consumer Marketing. Dr. Rosenbloom also serves on the ad hoc review boards of the Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Marketing, and Journal of Retailing. He is former president of the International Management Development Association and former vice president of the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Marketing Association. Dr. Rosenbloom is a past member of the Board of Governors of the Academy of Marketing Science. Dr. Rosenbloom is a leading expert on the management of marketing channels and distribution systems and the author of 10 books and more than 100 articles. His book Marketing Channels: A Management View, now in its sixth edition, has been the leading college textbook on marketing channels for over two decades. His book Marketing Functions and the Wholesale Distributor has been acclaimed in the wholesaling sector for providing the industry with new concepts and analytical methods to increase productivity in wholesale marketing channels. Great book

I can't remember keeping a book after passing a class, but this is one of the few exceptions. The information the author provides is clear, and interesting! I enjoyed learning how different companies move products and all the complicated procedures involved to get items to the final consumer, or other businesses. Also, the real-world examples that are discussed in the cases will not change often, the only issue is the companies that are presented may have gone bankrupt. It may seem like common sense after reading, but many people would never think of how many of the concepts discussed in the book are used in the real world. I recently graduated with a BS, and feel I learned the most from this book than any one I read in the past. If you are interested in logistics and/or marketing, this will probably be the most useful source of information you will need.

Not many choices....

Used for a graduate level marketing class. Very dry and not the best marketing book by a long shot. However, according to our professor there aren't many choices related to "Marketing Channels." There is very little (almost non-existent) help from the related web resources and the powerpoints that are available don't always follow the text. Basically the book needs to be updated.

Corwin Rules.

This handbook is a great guide that really simplifies patho into EXACTLY what you need to know. I had the pleasure of taking Patho from Dr. Corwin in person, and I used this book exclusively (even though she had a different patho book as the assigned "text" for the class). I am a B.S.N. student at a state university.

It is especially handy when you're putting together nursing care plans and want to get straight to the point. While you may need other resources for incredibly specific disease processes when you're doing clinicals in acute settings, this really covers the essentials. I found that Dr. Corwin can summarize in 2 sentences what might take a regular patho book an entire two pages to cover. Excellent buy. I have used mine since the first semester of nursing school, and it has a permanent spot in my nursing library.

mini book is worth a look

While the class can be a confusing mess of lab values and pathologies, Dr. C's book is straightforward and concise. If you're taking her class, this is the only text book you should be using. If you're taking someone else's class, you can use this as a nice study guide or care plan tool! Diagrams and pictures are helpful and it is organized by body systems with a good index in back to guide you to specific diseases, etc. I'd recommend this version since the 2003 addition had incorrect info on a few diseases (eg. diabetes) that have been extensively researched in the last 7 years!

During paramedic school, RN school, and afterward, I continue to use this book as a reference. This is a fantastic resource for any medical practitioner. This is a great book for a quick reference of a disease process during clinicals.

Excellent as both an adventure story and a piece of descriptive writing

Hammond Innes' golden era is generally considered to be his books from the late 1940's to the early 1970's. 'The Land God Gave To Cain' was written right in the middle of this outstanding run, and showcases clearly why he was such a good writer. Although firmly in the adventure/thriller mould, Innes' works were always more like "proper" novels, especially in their well-drawn characterisation, and their realistic and detailed descriptions of unusual environments. This book is a fantastic example of "classic Innes", working well on three levels; an intriguing adventure mystery, a powerful character drama, and an extraordinary piece of descriptive writing about the harsh environment of the Labrador.

The book opens with the death of Ian Ferguson's father, a man who was physically and mentally disabled during the war, and lived for nothing but his amateur "ham" radio. On receiving an SOS from a Canadian expedition, Ferguson Senior desperately struggled to his feet and cried out for the first time in years, and the effort killed him. But there are several bizarre implications of this message; firstly, that nobody else in the world received it, and secondly, that the lone survivor of the expedition has already reported the remaining men dead. How can a dead man send a radio message, and how could a radio signal travel to England but remain unheard only a hundred miles away? And why would a survivor abandon his mates and report them dead if they were obviously alive? Ian's determination to prove his father right sees him travel to the Labrador Railway, where he battles unsympathetic authorities and the harsh environment to follow in the footsteps of the expedition and uncover the truth.

Innes does a great job in bringing to life the bleak, frozen wasteland of the Labrador, as well as those who inhabit it. We follow Ian "up the line" from the relatively civilised Seven Islands to the frontier virgin wilderness near the Lake Of Lion, with each location being more remote and hostile than its predecessor. But it is not only the intense cold and remoteness that Innes focusses on, he gives the Labrador depth by exploring its spiritual significance and almost mystical beauty.

But what really makes this story are the characters. Ian Ferguson is once again the "everyman" protagonist who gets drawn into an extraordinary situation through a combination of luck and stubbornness. Darcy, who has spent years in the Labrador and is the only person on the line who believes Ian, combines tough resourcefulness with a reverent respect for the country and its people. But the two standout characters are Bert Laroche and especially Paule Briffe. Laroche is the lone survivor whom Ian believes left the other members to die, or possibly even murdered. And Paule is perhaps the most tragic character of all; daughter of the expedition leader and fianc�e of Laroche, she is torn between hoping her father is alive and hoping her fianc�e's is not a killer.

The dramatic tension in the book builds as Innes assembles all these characters, then traps them together in an environment from which there is no escape. Laroche is clearly hiding something, and his attempts to prevent Ian from finding the Lake of Lion become increasingly desperate, while Paule's doubts begin to grow. The combination of mystery and drama result in an incredibly powerful and poignant climax, in particular the confrontation between Paule and Laroche, and the final discovery of what really happened to the members of the expedition.

In all, this is just a great book, that works well as an adventure novel and as a piece of descriptive writing. If you're new to Hammond Innes and want to get a handle on his quite unique style, this is as good as place as any to start. And for long-time fans, this is definitely one of his best and most well-written books.

This book is so good, I can't put it down. The journey the main character goes on , throughout the book keeps me glued to the book for hours. I have read this book over and over again, and still am supprised at things that happen , as if I were reading the book for the first time. I can actually feel the cold of Labrador and the emotions of the people involved in the novel.

VERY disappointed.

The first ten hours were mind-numbingly slow. I kept hoping it'll speed up. No. Didn't even describe the landscape of Labrador except "cold, empty"... The first few chapters were full of description of nothing over and over again in the radio log books. Not engaging. Did not develop in reader any empathy for main or other characters. VERY disappointed.
