Review
"Even for the psychoanalytically oriented reader this book holds more than merely historical interest.  One cannot help being impressed by the wealth of knowledge and the perspicacity revealed in it, and there have certainly been few more compact presentations of socio-psychological problems…Psychoanalysts no less than sociologists will find the study of Durkheim’s book instructive and rewarding.  The editor and translators are to be commended for making the work available in an excellent and remarkably lucid translation.” —Psychoanalytic Quarterly

"Durkheim's contribution was a very considerable one...No investigation of the subject can disregard his views."—American Journal of Psychiatry

About the Author
Emile Durkheim (1858–1917) was a French sociologist who formally established the academic discipline and, with Karl Marx and Max Weber, is commonly cited as the principal architect of modern social science.

Do not purchase the Kindle version!
By oded
There is not much to say about the quality of this sociology classic. This is obviously a very important book, that shaped sociological thinking as we know it today. It is very well written, and is a must-read for any student of sociology, and perhaps even social sciences at large.
.
Yet, my negative review is specifically aimed at the Kindle version of this book: whoever made the adaptation of this book to version had done a very poor job! The paragraphs break at random points, sometimes in the middle of a sentence; some words are misspelled, with periods replacing one or several letters, leaving the reader guessing what the original word was; and most importantly - the tables are completely illegible. I don't know if it is a problem with the scan, but on my Kindle paperwhite it was impossible to decipher the words and numbers and make sense of the quoted data in basically all of the tables in the book.
This is highly disappointing, especially as this version seems to be made and sold by Amazon itself. I hope they will fix it soon, and update the version for all kindle users who already purchased this book.

By Steve Marson
As a person with an undergraduate degree in sociology and a Ph.D. in sociology, I am VERY familiar with Durkheim's SUICIDE. I, of course, have a hard copy of the book.

The problem with the hard copy is it lacks an index. For me, I really need an index for my current research. As a result, I purchased a Kindle edition of this classic research study. It's GREAT. I use the word search on my e-edition and use my hard copy to search the pages around my word search. Believe it or not, it has been a great time saver.

From Publishers Weekly
Robinson (Box Office Poison, Tricked) returns with his latest, a high-concept graphic novella. In 2010, mild-mannered software engineer Andrew Wicks goes to a hypnotist to quit smoking, but wakes up from his trance to find himself in high school in 1985. While the Peggy Sue Quits Smoking premise could have been disastrous, with this slim volume, Robinson cements his reputation as a master cartoonist. The art is exceptional. His characters are all visually distinct, with subtle facial expressions and body language. He uses layout and even lettering to establish mood and keep the reader firmly fixed through complicated shifts in time, place and perception. Two sequences—the initial hypnosis scene and a later confrontation between two characters—are bravura performances, using innovative but still clear ways of depicting complicated inner monologues. Unfortunately, while Robinson has mastered the graphic, his skill with the novel lags behind, with some wordy dialogue and occasional narrative clunkers: one piece of foreshadowing is so clumsy it reads better as a typographical error. When Robinson the writer catches up with Robinson the artist, watch out. Even with its flaws, this is still a master class in graphic storytelling. (July)

From School Library Journal
Grade 10 Up—Robinson is back with a concise gem that packs just as much punch as his lengthier titles. The premise here is nothing groundbreaking: Andy Wicks, a middle-aged family man, goes to a hypnosis clinic to break a 25-year smoking habit. As he mocks the ordeal as "mumbo jumbo," he is suddenly transformed into his 15-year-old self. With a 40-something mind still intact, he is forced to relive the horrors of algebra class, visits to the principal, elaborate social hierarchies, and, of course, intense sexual frustration. What makes Too Cool remarkable is the author's ability to revisit high school drama and reality bending in a lighthearted way yet with a depth and thoughtfulness that consistently underscore the plot. Robinson never trivializes adolescent angst. Instead, Andy's journey allows him to explore and understand the complex psychology behind his coming-of-age choices and behavior. That he has lived to see the results adds a compelling twist. Readers will gain perspective on mortality, family relationships, compassion, and love among bikini posters, gum-infested lockers, and family TV nights. As usual, Robinson's portraits perfectly underscore the intricacies of emotion in the story line, from the awkwardness of goofy permed-out and barely mustachioed teens to the anxiety of aging fathers with worry lines. Further, the artist's use of white pace, page composition, and flexible panels create a compelling sense of movement and a satisfying sense of flow. Teens are sure to have a lot of fun with the book.—Shannon Peterson, Kitsap Regional Library, WA

Review
Robinson's skillful draftsmanship balances caricature with realism in vibrant panels that will push readers to reflect on their own youthful, neglected opportunities. --Booklist

Too Cool to be Forgotten is Alex Robinson's best book, and one of the rare comics not written by Stan Lee to perfectly capture the tragedy and triumph of being a teenager. Totally recommended. --Brian K. Vaughan, author of Y: The Last Man, Pride of Baghdad, and Runaways

The real revelation is how Robinson, who usually specializes in ensemble casts, recaptures adolescent solitude so faithfully. A- --Entertainment Weekly

Robinson's best to date, but baffling title and presentation
By Hotrodimus
"Too Cool to be Forgotten" is probably Alex Robinson's finest work to date, though at a scant 128 pages it's far too short. Maybe I'm just a spoiled reader after the chunky "Box Office Poison" and the similarly thick "Tricked," but there's easily enough conceptual meat here (guy goes in for hypnosis, wakes up back in high school) to match the scope of those books. While the book flies by, Robinson still manages to hit all of the right and expected notes, and some of the funniest and most touching moments are derived from the natural conflict of a man with 50 years' experience trying to do things the "right" way instead of the way that his teenage self would have done them.

One spoiler-free note about the book's title and presentation in general; the final act takes such a heartbreaking left turn that I sat and cried for almost ten minutes after I finished it, having recently dealt with a similar experience in my own life. It's sort of baffling that the book has such a wackity-schmackity title and joke ciggy-pack presentation when the emotional center of the story ends up being a sledgehammer to the center of the reader's chest, though maybe that's the idea.

My review for Comicbookdb.com:
By William Hoffknecht
Wonderful Cartoon Storytelling

There is a blurb on the back of this book that states something about the fact that no writer captures the pain, anger, happiness, and triumph of being a teen better except maybe Stan Lee, and boy is this ever true.

I dove into this book thinking it was going to be good, but I was blown away at how great it was. The art is A+. There is brilliant flashes of great cartooning. In some ways it reminds me of a Jeff Smith, using the panels to assist in telling an wonderful story.

The lettering is fun and understated, while being interesting to read and sometimes challenging when it serves the plot. There is a great scene when the main character is being hypnotized where Alex Robinson uses the lettering to spell out what he is hearing and thinking, then reverses chunks and spells everything out backwards for a bit as he delves into his sub conscience mind.

The story is A+ as well. It starts out with a middle-aged man who wants to quit smoking, quaintly, almost comical. Then he decides to try to get hypnotized to never want to smoke. This opens his life back to when he was in high school, but with the mind and thoughts of a middle-aged man. As he reflects and lives out his day as a 15 year old again, he tries to make amends and finds keys to his life in current days. Finally he finds a certain moment that he feels that he has to change in order to quit smoking. After that is done he learns of one last task that he must accomplish before he can be sent back to his life as a middle-aged man.

The ending is very emotional and sad, but good in a way. I got a bit teary myself for a second because I know a lot of the pain that our main character was going through. There is not much falling action after the emotional climax; the ending is almost totally understated, but I like it. After all of that, I was drained myself, so the ending keep sweetly and quickly.

This was definitely the best book of 2008 in my view. If you are a comic book fan or even just a fan of great storytelling and great cartooning, this is a book that is well worth picking up. I cannot imagine a comic book fan not having this on their shelf. It goes next to your Complete Bone book, your copy of Comic Book tattoo, and your Strangers in Paradise books.

A+

Perfectly Walks the Line of Wittiness and Pathos
By GraphicNovelReporter.com
Too Cool to Be Forgotten has that perfect melding of title and cover that makes for a perfect image, so absolutely clever and funny that it begs to be read. Luckily, the story inside lives up to the hype of the outside imagery.

Andy Wicks wants to quit smoking. Now 40, he's been puffing away since he was 15, when he took his first drag while trying to look cool at a party. It led to a lifetime of addiction. As a full-grown man in middle age, with a wife and two daughters, he desperately wants to kick the habit, but he's found it difficult, if not impossible, in the past.

When his wife drags him to a hypnotist, he's not sure what to think. But he's willing to give anything a try, no matter how goofy it may seem. And so he finds himself in a center for holistic medicine undergoing a procedure he doesn't know what to make of--especially when he wakes from his trance as a 15-year-old in 1985. (Those who are math-inclined may notice that timing is a little off, which is most likely intentional: Either the modern-day portion of the story is set in 2010 or the numbers aren't meant to add up. It's probably the former, but this is a book that comes with the following disclaimer, so the latter is possible too: "Page 84 includes an error in which the protagonist . . . thinks the word "Dad" instead of "Did." This will not be corrected. . . . We apologize if the author's stubborn refusal to listen to reason, demands or threats at all diminished your enjoyment. . . .")

The author, Alex Robinson, has made a name for himself with the graphic novels Box Office Poison and Tricked. Here, he manages to deliver a perfectly subdued work that perfectly walks the line of wittiness and pathos. Alex isn't desperate to relive his teenage years--he barely made it out the first time--but he is determined to understand what he's doing here and why. When he gets the chance to amend his younger days and to approach his love life with the courage of an adult rather than an awkward teenager, he does so only for his own edification, not for revenge or for the opportunity to take advantage.

Robinson wisely saves the book's most tender moments for the riveting finale. The payoff is not so much a surprise--it can't be; it feels too right and too familiar--but it still catches the reader offguard.

Too Cool to Be Forgotten is full of some special touches too. Fans of sci-fi and fantasy who have contemplated the ramifications of time travel will appreciate Andy's dilemma regarding the perplexities of what's going on (like how much can he change in the past and still arrive at the future he knows?). Andy's amazement at the sheer potential that was present back in high school serves as a touching reminder of what brought him there in the first place, a need to quit something that was holding him back and threatening his future. The conclusion he ultimately reaches in this regard is the true emotional center of this excellent work.

Okay but not his best
By J. Driscoll
His previous books were awesome. This one was a little slow at times and the ending didn't have the typical twist. But it was still enjoyable. If you're a fan of Jack Reecher and Lee Childs as an Author...you'll enjoy it enough to continue the series. If you're new to the series, start from the beginning...

By Rachel
Kameron Hurley's creative mind and concise, direct prose give this novella a surprising depth for its length. Those familiar with her work will recognize the characters, and will be interested to see their first interactions. Anyone entering Hurley's Umayma for the first time should do themselves the favor of reading her God's War series as soon as they finish this book.

get bugs
By Lucas Thorn
I'll preface this by saying I'm a huge fan of Hurley's Bel Dame Apocrypha series. I'm also a fan of novellas, and miss the vintage pulp scifi and sword and sorcery novels we used to get. So, these two loves are naturally going to colour my opinion of this novella.

My bias aside, Hurley has invented a world mind-bogglingly refreshing in every single way. The magic system unique and fits so comfortably into a Mad Maxian scifi setting that's it's astounding no one's done this before. Then there's the central character, Nyx, who oozes battlescarred toughness from every single syllable. You cannot read Hurley's novels and feel underwhelmed. You can't feel anything but awed by the scope and structure of her world.

The interesting thing about the novella, for me, was how it fit with the previous novels. It was obviously going to have a simpler plot. It wouldn't have the same ability to bring in so many characters. I expected a glorified short story in many ways. But instead, we got a deeper character study. And an adventure. We got to see a little more into Nyx's guilt and her motives for (reluctantly sometimes) taking risks to keep valued members of her team alive. As an addition to the Bel Dame universe, it's perfect. And I hope Hurley considers throwing a few more of these at us.

In summary, this novella was just how I like my scifi. Short, bloody, and like a punch to the face.

fast paced story.
By Arun
A supposed introduction to Bel Dame Apocrypha, Kameron Hurley's Nyx is hard hearted woman on a mission. Picking up pieces to form a team for a mission, she finds little truth about an extreme science group in this story.
The ending seemed rushed and Anneke's joining her team felt easy. I'd like to read more Nyx.

Vietnam 1945: The Quest for Power (Philip E. Lilienthal Book), by David G. Marr

1945: the most significant year in the modern history of Vietnam. One thousand years of dynastic politics and monarchist ideology came to an end. Eight decades of French rule lay shattered. Five years of Japanese military occupation ceased. Allied leaders determined that Chinese troops in the north of Indochina and British troops in the South would receive the Japanese surrender. Ho Chi Minh proclaimed the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, with himself as president.

Drawing on extensive archival research, interviews, and an examination of published memoirs and documents, David G. Marr has written a richly detailed and descriptive analysis of this crucial moment in Vietnamese history. He shows how Vietnam became a vortex of intense international and domestic competition for power, and how actions in Washington and Paris, as well as Saigon, Hanoi, and Ho Chi Minh's mountain headquarters, interacted and clashed, often with surprising results. Marr's book probes the ways in which war and revolution sustain each other, tracing a process that will interest political scientists and sociologists as well as historians and Southeast Asia specialists.

"A winning combination of scholarly tome and readable history. . . . Marr tells this extremely complicated story very well, backing up his sharp analysis with mountains of supporting factual evidence. . . . Meticulous and objective, an indispensable document for understaning the roots of American involvement in Vietnam."--"Kirkus Reviews

excellent background -- if one can bear it!
By A Customer
The title of this book is misleading. Marr's topic is not 1945 alone but the period beginning in 1940, when the Germans conquered France and the colonial adminisrators at the other end of the huge Eurasian landmass were left in confusion -- a period that reached a climax of sorts in 1945, with the surrender of the Japanese and the inevitable manuveuring among the various contending factions within Indochina for power in the post-war picture.
Back in 1940....some of the French colonials were happy to follow the lead from the new Vichy govt in France (the puppets of the Germans) and so to co-operate with the Japanese. Others had more or less open Gaullist sympathies. One develops some sympathy, in the course of this book, for the Gaullists -- who must have thought, after the liberation of their country in Europe in 1944, that they were entitled to a restoration of the colonial status quo ante as their share of the post-war settlement.
Early in 1945, the Japanese decided the French could no longer be trusted to run Indochina in Japan's interests, and they placed it under the control of their own military. This put the French and the VC in an odd alliance. It was also a very ineffective alliance -- the Japanese remained firmly in control up to the time their god/emperor told them in a radio address the war was over and they must lay down their arms.
In these events, and much more (I can't convey the thoroughness of Marr's account in this review!), one comes to see the future, the next thirty years of it!, as so much inevitable misery, like a wound-up spring destined to uncoil slowly and painfully for all concerned.
So read this book to give yourself the background for any understanding of those 30 years. If you can bear to do so.

Summary of relevent issues in Marrs detailed history.
By dh427@alaska.net / J.D. Harmon
Scholar and Vietnam historian, David G. Marr has created a work of epic scope in his finely tuned account of the year that saw the end of World War II and defined the postwar world. The detailed study of Allied, Japanese, and Vietnamese involvement during the war and in the postwar maneuver for dominance in Vietnam, is essential for the reader who seeks to probe the politics of a cold war struggle that continued to rage for thirty years of land war in Southeast Asia. France was occupied by Nazi Germany in the spring of 1940 while Axis power, Japan, prepared to invade Vietnam in September. With its seaports, airbases, and overland transportation routes, along with its abundant natural resources and rice belts, Vietnam was crucial to Japan's war errort. In Vietnam a French colonial government had ruled its Indochinese Union, exploiting Vietnam's natural resources and manipulating its economy for close to one hundred years. Fearful of losing its colonial possession entirely by force, the French collaborated with Japanese military forces that allowed a functional French colonial administration to sustain the machinations of government in Vietnam from 1942 to 1945. The Office of Strategic Services, the forerunner of the CIA, began covert operations in Vietnam in the spring of 1943, working directly with respected and admired communist-nationalist, Ho Chi Minh. Substantial research, eye-witness analysis, photgraphs, and extensive footnotes support Marr's account of Ho's newly formed Viet Minh forces working with OSS "Deer Team" operatives to achieve Allied war goals and oppose the Japanese war effort. The year 1945 is to Vietnam what 1776 is to the United States; it marks the birth of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam headed by Ho Chi Minh. Ho made it clear to his US friends that his primary aim was not to promote communism but to achieve independence and self-determination for Vietnam. All Americans who knew him personally saw him first as a nationalist and second as a communist. Japan seized power entirely in Vietnam from a French colonial administration 9March1945. Vietnamese leaders saw the ousting of the French as a window of opportunity. By the end of July with Japan on the brink of defeat, members of the Viet Minh, Indochinese Communist Party, and associated nationalists seized history in what was termed the "August Revolution." A tidal wave of revolutionary and nationalist zeal for independence swept the country. On 2September Ho Chi Minh proclaimed the Democratic Republic of Vietnam in a public address to a nation unified in its desire for independence, quoting from the United States' Declaration of Independence, "these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal." Ho concluded his speech with: "Vietnam has the right to enjoy freedom and independence, and in fact has become a free and independent country. The entire Vietnamese people are determined to mobilize all their physical and mental strength, to sacrifice their lives and property, in order to safeguard their freedom and independence." Roosevelt opposed colonial aggression and returning Vietnam to France after the war stating that colonialism was dead. Before Roosevelt could enact US foreign policy regarding Indochina he died. The US State Department had little knowledge of or policy regarding Indochina. France's Provisional President, Charles DeGaulle, stated that if the US did not help France in Indochina, then France might be forced into the Soviet orbit. Only the US had a solvent economy at the close of WWII. The US believing France to be crucial in Europe in opposing Soviet expansionism, fully funded DeGaulle in taking back Vietnam from the Vietnamese. While DeGaulle organized a French Expeditionary Force to land, US ships transported British and Indian troops to seize control. Shipping, arms, uniforms, and provisions were supplied by the US. Contrary to orders from Allied Command, British General Douglas Gracey upon arrival 6September, maintained surrendered yet armed Japanese troops for internal security. Great Britain had her own colonies in Asia to put in order, hence, a vested interest in seeing colonial possessions regained. The newly formed government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam was efficiently evicted from office. Eventually a French Expeditionary Force arrived and took over with business as usual, imprisonment and massacre. Mr.Marr's text comes alive with first-hand accounts from participants in the extraordinary arena that was 1945. Marr writes of the summer OSS "Deer Team" met with Ho and the Viet Minh. Ho wanted to chat about the US, its history, political ideals, and US support of free, popular governments throughout the world. Team member, Rene' Defourneaux, from New York recalls Ho's arguing in broken English: "Your statesmen make eloquent speeches about helping those with self-determination. We are self-determined. Why not help us. Am I any different from Nehru, Quezon, even your George Washington? Was not Washington considered a revolutionary? I too want to set my people free." With Ho Chi Minh's apparent affinity for the US, for democratic political ideals, and for American friends in the OSS, along with his desire and hopes for a US alliance and support in achieving Vietnamese independence, Marr makes evident that the US had the future of an emerging self-governing Vietnam in the palm of its hand at the close of WWII. The subsequent French and US involvement in Vietnam remains one of the most misled and tragic affairs of the twentieth century.

Excellent overview of events in 1944-1945
By VG
One of the key eras in modern Vietnamese history, the period from 1944-1945 set the stage for the next thirty years of conflict and bloodshed. It's amazing to see how distracted decision-makers in other countries can so massively influence the fate of millions with barely a second thought. The Vietnamese people themselves were hardly even considered as the Japanese, French and Allies struggled for position in the world-wide drama. A million Vietnamese starve to death in Tonkin? So what? Mountbatten and Wedemeyer are having a tiff over post-war jurisdiction! And de Gaulle has his shorts in a knot over France's image!

It's a great act of research and synthesis, with the usual caveat - underscored by Marr himself - that it can often be difficult to verify sources from within Vietnam. But plumb those Viet sources he did, illustrating all sorts of Viet reactions to events big and small with accounts from local government offices, police reports, petitions, tax rolls, etc. Must have been massively tedious at times, but we're all the better for it.

It seems imperative to me to have a good understanding of this period, as it helps to explain everything that happened between 1954 and 1985. The people who came of age during WWII are the ones who led the country during those 30 years of diplomacy, bloodshed, civil war, proxy war, unification and retribution. The events of WWII opened their eyes and shaped their attitudes for the coming conflicts.

It's almost sad, however, to read how deeply the Vietnamese desired independence from the French, and to see how overjoyed most Vietnamese were by September 2, 1945, and at the same time to know that most of them really had no idea what they were launching into: more than thirty years of conflict, with several million deaths.

One note: there is not a lot information about Hồ Ch Minh or the Việt Minh in this book. It's a wide-ranging book, and there's just as much about the actions, attitudes and strategies of the French, the Japanese, the US, Bảo ại, the Viet provisional war-time government under the Japanese, various Vietnamese nationalist groups, and most of all, about ordinary Vietnamese people, as there is about the Việt Minh as a coherent political group and social movement. To be sure, the Việt Minh are featured more prominently the closer the book gets to mid-August 1945, but the book really covers a much greater field than that.

No idea whether Marr's most recent book is an update of this one. Have to check it out.

Four stars out of five.

A New Classic
By Art in NZ
Careful exegesis and thoughtful applications characterize this book. It is a book for anyone in the church who wants to know how the New Testament church was organized. From the beginning distinction between biblical authority (a fundamental for all Christians) and New Testament authority for the church (a Baptist distinctive) Bauder captured my attention and respect as a careful thinker. For his masterful treatment of the Scriptures that are used as proof-texts for Landmarkism & baptismal regeneration, he proved himself a careful expositor.
His list of Baptist distinctives is different than the usual BAPTISTS acrostic, but is an improvement. The same issues are dealt with but the refining of ideas is very helpful and (as mentioned above in the case of "B" for "Bible, our sole authority") more to the point. Interwoven throughout these chapters are practical applications for related issues (for example, civil disobedience with regard to abortion in the chapter on Separation of Church and State).
As a missionary pastor I found the chapters on Regenerate Church Membership and Congregational Government to be most helpful. Bauder lays a solid biblical foundation for these aspects of the New Testament church. He has no "Baptist" axe to grind; he is just being purely and thoroughly biblical.
I look forward to future "revisions" of this work not for any weakness I found in it but for the inclusion of more materials of this caliber that relate to the church.

Outstanding work!
By mojoman317717
I agree wholeheartedly with Art from NZ! Dr. Bauder's exposition is methodical, fair, and without overreaching bias. He obviously believes strongly in the Baptist distinctives, but he holds those beliefs with an appropriately humble grip. I'm going to use it as a textbook for an Adult Sunday School class. It's a must read for anyone who claims to be a Baptist, but also for many former Baptists and Evangelicals who think the "Baptist" label means little or nothing. In the end they may not agree with the substance of the meaning, but they will be unable to deny it's significance.

Time for an update.
By A Customer
I have reviewed and ordered this book as a text for my Typography students. It is very encompassing and thorough, providing many examples of typefaces and type usage. I probably would have given this review 5 stars if this was not the same publication that appeared in 1992. This book is worth keeping refreshed. The authors have gone to great lengths to provide excellent "contemporary" examples, so after 8 years it is time to address the issue of contemporary. Still, it is the best I could find out of many, and have adopted it for my course.

A Timely Warning About Reckless Economic Policies
By Motown
The book was originally written during the Great Depression to offer a peek into the future as seen by a widely admired economist. It is heavy going, not light reading, but does provide an excellent analysis of the perils to democracy if capitalism and socialism fail to properly address economic problems. The author warns that government interference in the market place is not the correct answer. His most interesting thesis seems to me to be that unfettered capitalism will fail due to its very economic success because critics will fail to remember the basic tenets that led to that success. Schumpeter gives us a good look at recent U.S. economic history but critics will not like what he implies.

Some Great Insights
By Joseph Ryan
This book is a complex and systematic sociological discussion of the evolution of industrial economies in the pre-1945 era. It also includes a summary of Karl Marx's theories, to help the reader follow the contrasts that Schumpeter draws between his observations and Marx's. It concludes with a number of sections containing Schumpeter's views on contemporary political economy from the perspective of the dates of the book's three editions: 1942, 1947, and 1949.

It's written conversationally, with enough grace to draw the reader along in a complex argument sustained through a number of chapters. Nonetheless, the author's self-indulgence also comes through: he pontificates and where he has nothing to say he says that a long book does not afford enough space to contain his argument. That's okay, I wouldn't have wanted it to be longer than it is.

This style works when you're right, and Schumpeter was magnificently right about one of those key facts that everyone can see instantly once attention is drawn to it: that the long-term growth that transforms living standards does not and cannot proceed by increasing the amounts of things produced, but instead must result from the introduction of new products and processes. Schumpeter connects product innovation with the efforts of individuals but concedes that it can be systematized also, which should have comforted him as he could see that the enterprise sector was becoming bureaucratized.

Schumpeter's second outstanding observation is surprisingly less often remarked: he laid out what later came to be called the "New Institutional Economics," showing why taking into account that private enterprise is essentially only semi-competitive, based on uniqueness of product innovation among other things, changes completely the normative evaluation of market structure and public policy. Mainstream economics taught Chamberlin-Robinson "monopolistic competition" as an oddity but otherwise ignored this point for decades, entertaining itself by re-doing outmoded Marshallian analysis using the mathematics of perfect gases. (I know this sounds strange, but you could look it up.)

Schumpeter also has intriguing observations on democracy, although by not measuring his thoughts against his contemporaries' he doesn't help us see where he is contributing. He characterizes democracy as being essentially competitive rather than ethical, and in chapter XXIII he lays out five reasonable "Conditions for Success of the Democratic Method." One might wonder whether any of them obtain in the U.S. at present.

It is on socialism where I and other readers feel he stumbles. His sarcasm about centralized, comprehensive socialist economic planning may be well founded in terms of feasibility, but it's unworthy rhetorically -- although the fact that economists went on trying to lay the bases of comprehensive planning (Lange-Lerner; Arrow-Debreu) may suggest that there was a reason for Schumpeter's frustration.

Like his treatment of socialism, Schumpeter's supposed prediction of capitalism's demise is largely rhetorical. First, Schumpeter defines capitalism as what we might almost call "Robber Baron" capitalism, whose primordially entrepreneurial firms he indeed predicts (or post-dicts) will be socialized, but through the stock market rather than by Bolsheviks. Second, his argument about the end of private ownership in general is not a prediction but rather a provocation: a warning about what might happen if then-current trends persisted.

With his concern about comprehensive public ownership, Schumpeter failed to take seriously the mixed economy. Since Schumpeter's time, technical economic analysis has helped identify the specific sectors, within a private-ownership economy, that may need "socializing" in some sense (think basic medical services), based on concepts like public goods and incentive compatibilities. Schumpeter missed that boat altogether.

ed policy class report
By elpa revw
Schumpeter is one of the better known economists in history. He is particularly famous for this book, Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy. Although he claims he does not advocate socialism or prophesize its inevitability (p. 416), he does make the case for why and how socialism may evolve from the current system according to its logic. The author mentions several times that laypeople do not have the “insight and power of analysis” (p. 144) necessary to understand the dynamics of institutional and economic processes. His audience is clearly one with a certain specialized knowledge. This book is not an easy read for everyone, though I do recommend skimming through the various sections at the very least if you have an interest in a very theoretical critique of the relationship between capitalism, socialism and democracy, as the title suggests.

I read this book for an education class on school finance, so I had that topic in mind when reading and would like to assess the book in the context of education and the potential implications of Schumpeter’s ideas on the way we view education. One of the more interesting relevant points in the book is that in a capitalist society civilization “creates, educates and subsidizes a vested interest in social unrest” (p. 146). That education is thought of as necessary for a successful democratic society and for alleviating social unrest, I find it interesting that Schumpeter says society educates with a vested interest in social unrest. Intellectuals are charged with the role of forming spearheads of class interests, so I am not clear how much of the unrest is intentional by key players like intellectuals, how much is endogenous to a capitalist system, and if the idea of education in a democratic society is overly romanticized when actually there is a greater force at play.

Schumpeter covers class conflict a lot and the tensions between the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. I thought about the dynamics of this conflict in the context of education, trying to compare relationships within the education system to these societal relationships characteristic of the economic system. He talked about unions and guild socialism as one possibility in the U.S. As teachers unions have been among the most influential in U.S. history, I am curious if modern guild socialism is one possible future of education based on his logic and reasoning.

He seems to suggest that capitalism will only remain stagnant with the help of the public sector. Schumpeter asserts capitalism will not continue earlier in his book (p. 61), but in the final section that was added later he clarifies it will only continue with intervention of the public sector. The author may have developed or changed his thinking from the first edition. However, I like the point he brings up about how bureaucratic apparatuses have always played a big role since feudal times, even if the form of bureaucracy looked different. People have proposed privatizing education or criticized the bureaucratic inefficiencies of school systems in the U.S. Schumpeter’s reasoning presents, if not defends, the logic behind bureaucracy in general. Schumpeter’s book was an important contribution to economic and social theory from a certain perspective. Although it does not directly address education, I believe study of theory like this can contribute to education by giving readers a unique framework through which to view the evolution of education.
