From the Inside Flap

Preface

This book consists of everything I have learned over the years about performance and tuning. It includes a structured approach, opinions, heuristics, and references. It contains documentation of the behavior of systems, with recommendations that are often needed but that are rarely available. I cover all of the Solaris operating system releases up to Solaris 2.6, and major Sun products up to the beginning of 1998.

This second edition of Sun Performance and Tuning has doubled in size, and almost all the content is new. I have been writing a monthly performance question and answer column for SunWorld Online magazine at sun/sunworldonline, and many of those columns have been updated and incorporated into this book. You should read my column regularly to keep up to date with developments that postdate publication of this book.

During the three years since first publication, the Internet transitioned from a useful tool to a major part of the computer business, and the Java phenomenon arrived. This is both a subject for discussion-hence the new subtitle for this edition-and a resource for obtaining detailed and up-to-date information. I have also worked closely with Richard Pettit over the last few years to develop the SE Performance Toolkit, and this edition contains detailed documentation written by Richard on the toolkit, and the performance interfaces provided by Solaris. We decided not to include it with the book on a CD-ROM, as it is easy to download the latest release over the Internet. The SE3.0 release is available and my January 1998 SunWorld Online column is a FAQ for SE.

This book is aimed both at developers who want to design for performance and need a central reference to better understand Sun machines, and at system administrators who have a Sun machine running applications and want to understand and improve overall performance.

This book covers an incredibly complex and fast-changing topic. I have tried to organize it in a useful manner with the most important information up front in each chapter and many cross-references. A book like this can never truly be complete and finished, but it has to be frozen at some point so it can be published!

How This Book Is Organized

This book is intended to be read sequentially, as it tries to cover the most significant and most common performance problems first. You can use it as a reference work by following the many cross-references that link related topics.

Chapter 1 - Quick Tips and Recipes is for those of you who need results now and don't have time to read the whole book first.

Chapter 2 - Performance Management covers the methods and tools used to manage performance.

Chapter 3 - Performance Measurement to decide whether your efforts at tuning have made any difference to the system performance.

Chapter 4 - Internet Servers contains an introduction to TCP/IP and offers guidelines on tuning and sizing web servers and proxy caching web servers.

Chapter 5 - Java Application Servers contains a complete sizing guide for serving the new class of Network Computer client systems based on Java.

Chapter6 - Source Code Optimization is aimed primarily at developers and end users who have access to the source code of the application being tuned. It covers Java performance and 64 bit issues.

Chapter7 - Applications tells you how to find out what an off-the-shelf application is doing and discusses changes in the execution environment.

Chapter8 - Disks investigates the performance characteristics of disk subsystems and describes how to monitor and tune them.

Chapter 9 - Networks contains Sun-specific information on network hardware and performance issues.

Chapter10 - Processors looks at how to decide whether you have enough CPU power for your workload. The chapter also provides a high-level description of the interactions between multiprocessor machines and Unix.

Chapter11 - System Architectures looks at the way uniprocessor and multiprocessor SPARC systems are put together.

Chapter12 - Caches looks at how caches work in principle, with examples of hardware and kernel based caching mechanisms.

Chapter13 - RAM and Virtual Memory explains how the paging algorithm works and where memory flows to and from in the system.

Chapter 14 - Kernel Algorithms and Tuning provides an insight into the algorithms and tunable parameters of the Solaris 2 kernel.

Chapter 15 - Metric Collection Interfaces describes the interfaces to Solaris and how to code to them to get at performance information.

Chapter 16 - The SymbEL Example Tools documents the example tools that are provided with the SE performance toolkit.

Chapter 17 - The SymbEL Language contains the complete user manual and descriptions of how to use this freely available performance toolkit.

Appendix A - Tunables Quick Reference turns the advice given elsewhere into tunable values summarized in table form.

AppendixB - References contains a long list of sources of further information, with a description of what is of interest in each document.

Related Books

I have tried to avoid duplicating the techniques and content covered by my colleague Brian Wong in his book Configuration and Capacity Planning for Solaris Servers, Sun Microsystems Press, 1997. There is some natural overlap, but it is best to treat the two books as a matched pair. Brian covers in great detail the techniques required to decide on an initial configuration and has far more information on system and storage architectures than I do.

During the summer of 1997, I presented a week long "Practical Performance Methods" class with Dr. Neil Gunther as part of the Stanford University Western Institute of Computer Science (WICS) summer seminar program. Neil's material is covered in his book, The Practical Performance Analyst, McGraw-Hill, 1998. Neil takes the most advanced techniques of performance analysis and modeling and relates them to real-world situations in a way that you can use directly to solve problems.

only if you're just starting out
By Alex P.
After reading the other reviews I had high hopes for this book. The book is not geared to people that already have basic sysadmin skills. And in one case the book makes a rather dubious statement. They list a few ndd parameters and state "The other values should never be changed on a production system." Well, they left out tcp_ip_abort_cinterval. And they don't mention tcp_ip_abort_linterval at all which so far seems to be an undocumented Sun Microsystems parameter. A book about tuning should cover all the tunable parameters and explain cause/effect. Simply stating that you never change the other parameters without explaining why isn't why you buy a book on Performance and Tuning.
If you're just starting out with Sun administration and do not know a lot of the unix commands to administer and monitor a Solaris box this book will help. The book does cover much of the basics and background that someone starting out needs. The book does leave out a number of higher level concepts and doesn't cover all tunable parameters so it doesn't really help much beyond already available text/webpages which you'll still have to research and scour to really learn the whole story on Solaris performance and tuning. But if you already know some of what you're doing you're money is better kept in your pocket.

Indispensible
By Shawn A. Clifford
The first 5 pages alone helped me to tune my systems, setup cachefs, etc. Definitely worth the money if you are responsible for the care and feeding of Solaris boxes.

Essential Library Additon for Solaris professionals
By A Customer
This is a book for all Solaris professionals and non-professionals who have to deal with performance issues on the Solaris platform. Gives much needed nuts and bolts approach to performance analysis and give behind the scenes details. Some sections are too technical for novices and even Solaris Administrators familiar with many programming concepts and architectural issues may struggle with some technical discussions.
Negatives: Some sections are a little preachy toward the Solaris operating sytem. This shouldn't be a surprise since it's written by Sun Employees about Solaris. Sometimes technical illustrations of tuning result in this version of Solaris do XYZ, but we fixed it with patches or it was resolved in an operating system upgrades. This leaves you saying in some cases that's real nice, but all I have to do is upgrade or patch Solaris instead of tune it.
Positives: Most administrators and UNIX system professionsals are starved for this type of information. There are few technical courses of this type available and don't always go into this level of detail. Generally, it's very well presented on a subject that can be difficult to present in a capativating way.

In an era when we are bombarded with gratuitous violence and sex, "The Puritans" is a welcome respite. While it may be Christian historical fiction, please don't think that plot and character have been sacrificed. In fact, Cavanaugh does a superb job of creating characters we really care about, and the plot is anything but predictable. Plus, all this is happening in front of an historically accurate setting. It's just nice to sit down with a good book that you know isn't going to surprise you with a lot of unnecessary vulgarity, violence, or sex. I intend to read the entire series.

Great Christian fiction
By Paul Schmidt
What a great book. Not only did it have action and romance, but it was inspiring. But the best part was the fictional character of Drew Morgan, who started out with no knowledge of Christ, to a strong, dedicated Christian.
It is nice to have fiction that has a meaning and is hard to put down. This book has both!

One of my Favorite Books
By Dr. Marc Axelrod
I've read a number of Jack Cavanaugh's books, but this one is special. Cavanaugh writes about Drew Morgan, a young man hired by Bishop Laud in 1629 England to spy on the Puritans. But Drew is unexpectedly touched by the spiritual curate Christopher Mathews, and he is drawn to his daughters as well. He admires Nell for her spirituality and her intelligence, and Jenny for her vivaciousness and her love of life.

But loyalties to Bishop Laud have to come first. This creates problems and tensions. The last portion of the book takes place in the American Colonies. be prepared for a breathtaking, powerful conclusion.

This is Cavanaugh's first book and so far, by a narrow margin, I would have to say that it is his best.

Introductory R: A Beginner's Guide to Data Visualisation, Statistical Analysis and Programming in R, by Robert Knell

R is now the most widely used statistical software in academic science and it is rapidly expanding into other fields such as finance. R is almost limitlessly flexible and powerful, hence its appeal, but can be very difficult for the novice user. There are no easy pull-down menus, error messages are often cryptic and simple tasks like importing your data or exporting a graph can be difficult and frustrating. Introductory R is written for the novice user who knows a little about statistics but who hasn't yet got to grips with the ways of R. This new edition is completely revised and greatly expanded with new chapters on the basics of descriptive statistics and statistical testing, considerably more information on statistics and six new chapters on programming in R. Topics covered include

1) A walkthrough of the basics of R's command line interface
2) Data structures including vectors, matrices and data frames
3) R functions and how to use them
4) Expanding your analysis and plotting capacities with add-in R packages
5) A set of simple rules to follow to make sure you import your data properly
6) An introduction to the script editor and advice on workflow
7) A detailed introduction to drawing publication-standard graphs in R
8) How to understand the help files and how to deal with some of the most common errors that you might encounter.
9) Basic descriptive statistics
10) The theory behind statistical testing and how to interpret the output of statistical tests
11) Thorough coverage of the basics of data analysis in R with chapters on using chi-squared tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, regression, ANOVA and general linear models
12) What the assumptions behind the analyses mean and how to test them using diagnostic plots
13) Explanations of the summary tables produced for statistical analyses such as regression and ANOVA
14) Writing functions in R
15) Using table operations to manipulate matrices and data frames
16) Using conditional statements and loops in R programmes.
17) Writing longer R programmes.

The techniques of statistical analysis in R are illustrated by a series of chapters where experimental and survey data are analysed. There is a strong emphasis on using real data from real scientific research, with all the problems and uncertainty that implies, rather than well-behaved made-up data that give ideal and easy to analyse results.

Excellent Introduction And Advised For Quick Understanding Of Basic R Capability
By Chris Harding
Hello,

First, there is much information available online about R, but much of the R literature is quite advanced. In addition, PhD statisticians, which write much of the R documentation, have a tendency to use very specific vocabulary words to describe a method. For the later reasons, the learning curve for the powerful open source R can be quite gradual when considering learning on the Y axis and Time on the X axis.

This Introductory course provides an opportunity to understand a massive amount of R for computing statistics. It is written for beginners but actually provides very useful R tools. The book provides knowledge to quickly become proficient in R, which can be challenging. If you google R, you will find there is much information on the Internet about the process of importing data as an example. It appears that many struggle with the latter task. This task and more are explained in this introductory book in a logical step-wise process.

Personally, I believe R, which is free and powerful, should be a part of every engineering and scientific statistical course. Why? As a chemical engineer, I have used statistics to optimize processes. Since validated statistical software was not distributed, I did my work in Microsoft Excel, which I was familiar with and I was rushed, but wish I would have known about well developed and introductory R documentation. This Introductory book would have been quite helpful.

Also, I appreciate that Dr. Knell also suggests books for more complicated topics. I think most people, myself included, forget that our professors kindly lead our learning. As such, we did not have to review textbooks, etc. Although the Internet is useful in this process, one can still stumble upon a difficult read. Since Dr. Knell does such a good job with explaining Introductory R in easy to understand language, I believe his suggested books are probably effective for quick learning as well. As such, I plan to us the Internet to evaluate his suggested readings before I buy my own.

In fact the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) used R to evaluate part of the complicated relationship of heart toxicity and drugs[1]. The later is important because the FDA requires their regulated industries use "validated" statistical software packages. As such, FDA must have the opinion that R is appropriate data analysis software, which might calm some peoples fear about learning R.

Quote: "The limits of intra-subject day-to-day variability were calculated using R 2.12.0 (R Project for Statistical Computing, Vienna, Austria)."[1]

Finally, I also suggest scientist and engineers become more informed about "Linear Mixed Models," and R handles such models effectively.

As an R novice I am always on the look out for a good introduction. Knell's book provides a user friendly method of getting into the platform and a useful set of instructions for statistics in R and many visualization techniques. Perfect for the novice, students and those with R phobia. Certainly recommended.

The Oz Factors: The Wizard of Oz as an Analogy to the Mysteries of Life, by Lawrence R. Spencer

Our humanity has long since been exceeded by the power of the wicked witches of science and government to destroy all life with nuclear weapons, alter our DNA and control our minds with psychotropic drugs and our lives with media lies. Our thoughts and conjectures about life and the universe are often based on assumptions, unproven theories, hearsay, rumors and misinformation. Decisions we make in life may be based on ancient attitudes and archaic practices. There are 12 common denominators that prevent observation, understanding, and workable solutions to problems of existence. How do each of these "Oz Factors" influence our history, science, philosophy, our lives and our future? We can chose our own Yellow Brick Road. We can pull back the curtain of rhetoric and dogma. We can build a better Emerald City for ourselves and our children. Do you really want to go back to Kansas?

A must read for all citizens of Earth! --Shirely Cage

From the Publisher
LOGIC IN THE LAND OF OZ

"Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas any more. We must be over the rainbow!"--Dorothy from 'The Wizard of Oz'

What if you were in Dorothy's shoes? First, you run away from home to save your dog from being destroyed by the sheriff. Then, you get amnesia from being knocked on the head by a window frame. Next, you're swept up by a storm and carried far away from home. Finally, you crash-land in an alien world.

How would you feel?

Many of us, like Dorothy in 'The Wizard of Oz', feel as though we have crash-landed far, far from our own, personal home; far away from the place in our hearts or in our dreams where everything is just exactly the way we want it to be; a place where there is no trouble. We don't quite know what happened to our home or how we ended up where we are now, but we have a vague, fleeting feeling, that our home is still there, waiting for us to come back.

Is there really such a place?

Is it just a dream?

If such a place exists, how do we get there from here?

Who are we?

How did we get here?

Where is here?

These are primordial questions--the original, fundamental questions about the mysteries of life and universes which have existed since the beginning of time.

One method of figuring out the answers to questions is to compare an unknown subject to one that is similar, but already known. The comparison of two similar things is called an analogy. Storytelling, teaching, explaining things to young children, and scientific research all use analogies as a tool for better understanding.

Thus we begin our journey into "The Wizard of Oz" as an Analogy to the Mysteries of Life.

Review of The Oz Factors
By Robert W. Johnson
The purpose of this book is to give a reader some guidelines in a quest to solve the mysteries of life. In my opinion, it serves that purpose well. Each of the 12 Oz factors represents a "common denominator of Western Logic which prevents observation, understanding, and the attainment of workable solutions to the problems of human origin and existence." Further, the author states, "The allegorical story of The Wizard of Oz and its timeless characters is an appropriate vehicle through which to learn more about the mysteries of life." If you read the book, I think you will agree. The learning of philosophical principles is thereby made not only easier, but actually delightful.
Here are a few of the Oz factors, to whet your appetite for the others:
Missing Information: Most real thinkers would agree that a valid concept of any subject that all information pertinent to it be available. But, study of almost any subject reveals not only that there are missing pieces to the puzzle, but that often the pieces are missing because vested interests (another Oz factor) have deliberately withheld them from the public.
Assumptions: Every theory presented by so-called authorities in science, religion, politics, etc contains one or more assumptions. If the assumption is false, the theory crashes. And so we suspect that the reason why assumptions are rarely listed is that their presence would expose the weaknesses in the view being advanced.
Source of Information: Many sources of information like to "play God", promoting unquestioning belief in their views. Example from Science: "We're smart and you're not, so just accept what we say." Example from Religion: "We're holy and you're not, so just accept what we say." They need to be told, "Curb your dogma!"
False Information: Investigation shows that many sources deliberately put out false information, for reasons related to the benefit of the organization they support. To quote the author: "Lies replace the truth when a vested interest is being served."
I could go on with praises for this book, but space won't permit it. Bottom line: If you want to be a clearer thinker and a more successful searcher for truth, you will do well to read this book.

Pointing out the truth behind the cover story
By pmgeorgic
This is a book that you will pick up and read again and again. The topics are fed to you slowly and then you are hit with the cold hard truth, that the public has been duped on every side. For those of you who wish to share the truth, this is a great reference book of material for conversation that can become explosive. I have the book close to me most of the time. This is one to own and keep reading as time goes on. There are more and more areas of reality to address then anyone has ever realized or cares to observe in most cases.. Few know the truth or even wish to accept the truth. Life is not always as it seems.

Mandatory reading for all citizens of Earth!
By DeDee Cage
This is an incredible book that will open your eyes to the real history of mankind, the current precarious conditions of our world's ecology, economy, and social structures under the influence of the powerful and oppresive vested interests, and the propaganda machines they control and use so well.
I could not put this book down as Lawrence Spencer gave me a history lesson unlike any I ever had before. And even as I was being amazed by this tapestry of the history and development of the educational, medical, pharmaceutical, banking, government and military organizations of our world, it was the combined impact of their effects on our planetary environment, the health, sanity, and freedom of all beings that changed my viewpoint forever. I was so shocked that it took this book to draw back the curtains of illusion and make the truth so evident that I had to admit to an old, nagging apprehension that things were not quite as they appeared or were being "officially" presented to be.
The author's humor and wit kept me glued to this story, and the analogy of "The Wizard of Oz" to these frightening mysteries of life made the vast scope of this work magically comprehensible. He even exposes the simplicity of how to handle our information overload so that we can actually see and determine for ourselves just what is actaully going on "in the merry old land of Oz" so we can act to help create a meaningful future on this planet. I foresee this book as a major motivation for increased global awareness and social responsibility that will rejuvenate our hopes for the future generations with positive and effective actions taken now.

Solitude and Other Stories (Richard Sullivan Prize in Short Fiction), by Arturo Vivante

Solitude and Other Stories represents Arturo Vivante's quest to use writing to uncover hidden truths. These twenty-four short stories - set in Italy, New England, and Canada - explore various themes, including, as the title story says, solitude. Vivante begins the narrative with a self-oblivious solitude that will become loneliness. Day after day, night after night, Vivante's narrator becomes aware of his isolation, and he decides to seek the company of others. Companionship, therefore, becomes another theme developed in these stories. Although not explicitly autobiographical, many of these stories do have an autobiographical tone. Vivante writes about things that may have happened in his life. His stories often stem from the observation of a bright or meaningful moment, and always center on exploring the ideas and emotions of his characters. Written with clarity, simplicity, and sincerity, Solitude and Other Stories is a lovely collection from an accomplished author.

"The author so calmly and transparently understates, his touch is so gentle, that for quite a while you don't realize you are being led by the hand through mighty strange places, along those twisty byways that on a map would make the heart seem such a maze."

Searching for human connection
By Merrill Joan Gerber
Los Angeles Times Book Review, July 24, 2005

Solitude And Other Stories by Arturo Vivante University of Notre Dame Press: 202 pp., $35 cloth, $16.50 paper

By Merrill Joan Gerber, Merrill Joan Gerber is the author of "This Is a Voice From Your Past: New and Selected Stories" and "Glimmering Girls: A Novel of the Fifties."

Unlike Chekhov, who called medicine his lawful wife and literature his mistress, Arturo Vivante gave up medicine entirely when, as a young doctor in Rome, he began to sell his stories to the New Yorker and decided writing was his true calling. Both professions require attention to the dimensions of suffering and pain, although Vivante seems to have been drawn more to the pain of the psyche than to the pain of the body. In "Solitude, and Other Stories," Vivante muses on the essential loneliness of our human existence and our yearning for connection. He describes with delicacy and passion those precious moments when we reach out to another person, or, in some cases, to another creature of nature, and there is a vivid response.

Many of the tales in "Solitude" are narrated by an itinerant professor who, like Vivante himself, travels far from home to teach at colleges across the United States. In "The Cricket," the professor is alone in a college-owned house where there is no other creature but a cricket. He is attuned to the cricket's noises; he comes to depend on the sound and its variations. "The shrill, piercing note had a ubiquitous quality. It filled the room the way its companions outdoors filled the night. The only difference was that outside a choir was playing; this was a solo. And his only company. Playing for him." When another professor arrives and in total indifference stomps on the cricket, the narrator is horrified.

In "Reflection," a middle-aged man admires the beautiful hair of a young woman sitting in front of him on a train. He recalls how his wife has criticized him for his interest in young women, and his daughter once called him a fool for admiring, at a funeral, a girl with "a magnificent shock of red hair." He thinks: "Why should one ignore beauty at whatever age, of whatever age, and anywhere, anytime, even at a funeral service?"

"Crosscurrents" describes a man who is low in spirits and without energy but longs to engage in life. Set in Cape Cod, where Vivante has lived for many years, the man lies in bed and feels the wind beckon him to go sailing. "But still he lay, anchored by a sense of inertia and dejection to the bed." When finally he goes out to sail, "[h]e felt more alive in this shaky old boat than in the safety of his bed. Did speed, instability, danger make one more aware of life than stillness, security, safety? If so ... sail out into the open sea. Yes, leave all sluggishness behind."

Vivante is a master of capturing the essence of a moment. In "Doves" he describes the courtship of two pigeons, "their iridescent plumage glorious in the sun ... their beaks joined as in a kiss.... Then she stood still and crouched while he hopped behind her .... The union lasted no more than a few seconds, but in that time, hidden by the softness of their plumes, in momentary darkness, the fluid of love and life was duly transmitted."

Love is a primary force in these stories, although not necessarily the love of a man and his wife. Often, the man, far from home, seeks the comfort of an available woman. In "Osage Orange," the narrator thinks of a line from a novel: "I've never had anything approaching a successful love affair," and he remembers a night he spent with a woman "It had been no affair. It had been merely a night not even a whole night.... Later, in the extreme moment of passion, she gave a cry that seemed to him to fill not just the room and house but the whole town, and to go out like a wave ... it was a cry, he thought, 'such as made the world in the beginning,' primeval, belonging to no time and to all time."

In "Company," the traveling man comes home for a weekend to see his wife, although "[h]er visits to his bedroom became rarer and rarer, till, some ten years ago, they stopped altogether." He finds his wife petting the cat and he longs to be petted by her in so tender a way. She rejects him and says, "Well, you wanted it this way ... you and all your girlfriends." "What girlfriends?" he asks, but so faintly that she doesn't reply.

Vivante's stories shine with intensity and passion; they tell the stories of the human heart in prose that is lyrical and luminous. Though he has sold 70 stories to the New Yorker and published two novels, his work has not brought him the recognition it should have. In "The Italian Class," the teacher muses, "Why publish or write? Why try to make a work of art of words, notes, colors or clay?" Perhaps the art evident in these stories can help explain why. *

Arturo Vivante A Master of the art of the short story
By Harriet Miller
Solitude and Other Stories by Arturo Vivante
Vivante, a master story teller, his tales often thinly disguised autobiography
are set in Italy, the U.S and in Canada; some were published in The New Yorker Magazine and other places but never before collected into a book. I had not read them before. His stories are tightly constructed little gems to be read for the pleasure of language, theme and what I think of as set up. I love the way he introduces each story with interesting information about for example, the catamaran, the making of maple syrup, the beauty of older women, but until the end one doesn't learn why we needed to know. Vivante's stories are instructive for any would-be writer of short stories and lover of fine literature. I'm reading them for a second time.

Surprise!: The Secret to Customer Loyalty in the Service Sector, by Vincent P. Magnini

Modern consumers are being bombarded with in-formation from every angle. They can’t handle it and, consequently, tune out large portions of the information. Consumers, therefore, often enter service transactions with predetermined men-tal scripts regarding how they predict the trans-actions will transpire and are not paying close attention. In order to gain their full attention, firms must find ways to surprise consumers dur-ing transactions; that is, firms must spawn mental script deviations for them.
Research indicates that these script deviations can cement consumer loyalty. This book details how to create a surprise culture in a service firm. Because a consumer can only be “surprised” by a given tactic one time and surprise ideas can be copied by competitors, a firm with a culture that generates and implements a constant stream of surprise tactics is one that has the higher edge in achieving success in the modern envi-ronment of information overload.

The Mysteries of the Great Cross of Hendaye: Alchemy and the End of Time, by Jay Weidner, Vincent Bridges

Decodes the message inscribed on the Great Cross of Hendaye in France

• Uses the work of 20th-century alchemist Fulcanelli to predict the date of the fatal season of the apocalypse

• Shows how periodic galactic alignments may cause catastrophes on Earth

• Examines how the secret of the center of the galaxy reveals the true location of the lost civilization of Atlantis

• Reveals the alchemical secret of the imperishable Light Body of ancient Egypt deep within our DNA

The Mysteries of the Great Cross of Hendaye reveals one of Western occultism's deepest secrets: The alchemical transformation of base metal into gold is also the transformation of the current Iron Age into the Golden Age. Based on the work of the enigmatic 20th-century alchemist Fulcanelli, authors Weidner and Bridges show how the greatest alchemical secret is that of time itself and that coded into an obscure monument in southwestern France--the cross in the town square of Hendaye--is the imminent date of the apocalypse. The authors' explorations of this symbolism lead them from the cross of Hendaye to the western facade of the cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, the Pyrenees, ancient Egypt, and the secret origins of Atlantis in Peru, to reveal that we are indeed living in a "fatal season" and that this season is intimately connected to our solar system's alignment with the galactic center. The authors' in-depth examination of alchemy's connection with the coming end days also reveals that this astro-alchemical knowledge was part of the sacred science of the Egyptians and the Atlanteans, whose coded messages are, at last, deciphered to guide humanity to its future destiny.

Review
“It would be impossible to describe or even summarise the staggering amount of information in this book. The material covers vast areas of Western occult knowledge, some parts of which have almost been lost to the genuine seeker. . . . A highly recommended book.” (Jennifer Hoskens, New Dawn, May-June 2005)

". . . [This book] is packed with very clear 'indications' towards the secrets of life. . . . concise expressions of the significance of alchemy and cosmology. Anyone who is interested in the Knights Templar, Holy Grail, Christian Mysticism, Immortality and being alive in the first place should certainly read this book." (Oliver Perceval, Light, Summer 2005, Vol. 125, No.1)

"A good book, worthy of reading, and if the authors are right, either sell your bonds, or don't worry about peak oil, credit card rates, or terrorism, as the End of Time is near." (Institute for Hermetic Studies, Oct 2006)

“Fascinating detail . . . a truly groundbreaking work.” (Moira Timms, author of Beyond Prophecies and Predictions)

“The authors, by their brilliantly derived mix of alchemy with astrophysics, have breathed new life into the Fulcanelli enigma.” (Joscelyn Godwin, author of Cosmic Music)

"A brilliant deductive revelation." (John Major Jenkins, author of Maya Cosmogenesis 2012 and Galactic Alignment)

Well done!!
By A. M. Tawadros
Very nice view into esoteric occult mysteries. The strength of this book is the way Mr. Weidner & Mr. Bridges explain history, mythology, alchemy, qabalah, astronomy, astrology & tarot cards into the meaning of symbols on the Cross of Hendaye. If you have no background for the above subjects, the authors provide adequate explanations for you to understand their way of thinking. If you are closed minded, unwilling to stretch boundries in accepted history & science, you will have an under-appreciation for this book. If you have an open mind to a different view, especiality with history, you will appreciate the author's thought processes. Even someone with a substantial formal education will understand a need to look into these esoteric studies that are not formally taught. I thank the authors for this very informative book.

DiaGnosis: Even more fascinating!
By G. Stray
Un updated, much expanded edition of A Monument to the End of Time

In 1926, an enigmatic alchemist called Fulcanelli published a book called "Le Mystere des Cathedrales", or Mystery of the Cathedrals, which explains how Gothic cathedrals have hermetic and alchemical secrets encoded into their architecture and sculptures. In 1957, a second edition appeared, and included an extra chapter on the significance of a monument in the town of Hendaye in the Pyrenees. The monument - an engraved pedestal with a pillar and engraved cross - was built around 1680. The Mysteries of the Great Cross of Hendaye is a thorough exposition of the hidden meaning encoded into this Hendaye Cross.

The authors have traced the alchemical thread back to Egypt; to the first Gnostic groups, and re-exposed the fact that behind alchemy lies a triple transmutation - inner, outer and time. The inner transmutation is the refining of the psycho-sexual energies and fluids; the outer is using the inner change to transmute physical states; the third is the same transmutation applied to the whole Earth, changing the Age of Iron to the Age of Gold. The 4 ages - Gold, Silver, Bronze and Iron relate to the 26,000-year cycle of precession, with the Fall occurring when the Tree (the celestial axis, or earth's rotational axis), points away from the centre of the galaxy. "Resurrection"or "redemption", occurs when the Tree points towards the centre of the galaxy. This is the point when the "sparks of light" - our souls as fragments of God - return to the source.

The thread is traced from ancient Egypt to the Coptic Church, the Gnostics, the Hebrews, Islaam (the Sufis), the Order of Sion, and the Knights Templar, the grail romances, the tarot, and, with increasing persecution of heretics, the engraving of cathedrals, and finally, the Rosicrucian movement.

The 4 engravings on the pedestal are found to refer to the 4 tarot trumps; The Star; The Moon; The Sun, and Judgement. The pillar is the Djed, or Earth's rotational axis ( Moira Timms has already pointed this out see Raising the Djed). The two "x" engravings refer to the winding of the ecliptic and the equinoctial points, plus trump 20, judgement. The "ocruxaves pesunica" engraving means "the secret concerns a cross and a snake which somehow measures the 12th part". When combined, these clues (along with clues from the kabbalistic Tree of Life, whose 22 paths correlate to the 22 tarot trumps), the authors conclude that half a precessional cycle ago, the spring equinox fell on the cusp of Leo/Virgo; 12,960 years later, in 2002, the autumn (fall) equinox will be in the same position. The planetary attributions of the tarot trumps, combined with the orientation of the faces of the monument confirms that 22 September 2002 is the date in question. Trump 14, temperance (Alchemy), correlates to the direction of Galactic centre, while trump 21, the World, correlates to the opposing Galactic edge.

Fulcanelli implies that the cross at Hendaye signifies a "fatal period" of a "double catastrophe". If autumn equinox 2002 is the mid-point of a 20-year period (the XX engraving implies this), this may imply the last katun of the Mayan "Great Cycle"(13-Baktun cycle), since this is the nearest autumn equinox to the katun mid-point (12 Feb 2003, Long Count date 12.19.10.0.0). The authors were stunned to discover that Paul LaViolette has been warning the world of just such a double catastrophe, in the form of a galactic core explosion, which he already tentatively linked to the 2012 end-point. The first effects would be "electromagnetic shifts...crustal torque, pole shifts, tidal waves and high winds", the second catastrophe would be "an explosion of the sun's corona caused by the influx of cosmic dust pushed by the galactic superwave".

Fulcanelli also said that the inscription "ocruxaves pesunica" revealed a place of refuge. By clues from Fulcanelli, the authors arrived at 2 anagrams: Inca cave, Cusco, Peru, and Hail to the Cross at Urcos. The authors were again amazed to find not only caves at Cusco, but a nearby town called Urcos with a cross. Sadly, the original cross had been destroyed, but they concluded that the place of refuge may be either the caves at Cusco, or the legendary tunnels under the Andes, if someone finds an entrance.

The authors suggest that we should learn to "weave" our "Bardo or transitional body into nicely fractal flows of self-awareness" simply by meditating on compassion, as suggested by the work of Itzhak Bentov (Bentov explains in Stalking the wild Pendulum p.33-36 & 54-56 that in meditative states, the breathing is so gentle that it no longer interferes with the feedback of the aorta, allowing the system to become resonant, allowing the whole body to resonate at the same frequency as the earth - 7.8 Hz. How this is affected by the increasing rate of Schumann resonance remains to be researched). We shall thus be ready to be "harvested", to become a soul inhabiting a star, like the pharaohs of Egypt (see Star Birth Bardo in the Body of Orion). The Paris Papyrus gives some clues that the transformational process may be triggered by the light from the glow of the exploding galactic centre, triggering a cerebro-chemical outpouring which fuels an internal light that externalizes as "the shining light or star body of imperishable quality". The authors suggest that we need to prepare by performing a ceremony every equinox, in which the kabbalistic tree of life is "projected onto the Celestial sphere", a technique developed by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.

Brilliant, but so many topics without logical organization
By David Montaigne
Before I even get into this book I want to point out how impressed I am with the thinking of Jay Weidner. He really understands how the secret wisdom of ancient mystery schools could be conveyed across the ages. Anyone considering this book will probably also appreciate his analysis of Stanley Kubrick's movies, especially 2001 and the Shining. Kubrick was a genius, possibly the greatest producer/director ever - and I would never have appreciated the unthinkable scope of what he achieved - especially the alchemical nature of 2001: A Space Odyssey - without Weidner's interpretation. Look it up and prepare to be amazed.

That being said, "The Mysteries of the Great Cross of Hendaye" is not an easy read, nor is it meant for a mass audience. Unlike Weidner's interpretation of Kubrick's movies, you have to be well educated in certain topics to fully appreciate this book. Readers who are already familiar with the concepts of alchemy, golden ages, eschatology, the precession of the earth's axis, the astronomical nature of the dragon, the cube of space, the sun behind the sun, the Knights Templar, the philosopher's stone, the tree of life, galactic superwaves, Atlantis, and the Bible (especially the New Testament, especially the Book of Revelations) will understand a great deal more of this book than those readers being introduced to those topics through this book.

Despite the chaotic whirlwind of topics through which the authors seek support for their overall conclusions, the heart of this book is simple enough - there are two main themes - an analysis of a 17th century monument which encodes a great deal of hermetic wisdom, and a study of "Fulcanelli," the pseudonym of one or more modern initiates in a hidden mystery school who explain(s) the esoteric messages hidden in the art and architecture of France's greatest cathedrals. Fulcanelli's explanations are found in the 1926 book "Le Mystere des cathedrales," a book which brought many secret traditions and hidden wisdom into the light of day for the first time in centuries. Fulcanelli's book also had a new edition three decades later with a new chapter about an intriguing little stone monument in Hendaye, just across from the French border on the Atlantic coast of Spain.

The monument at Hendaye is covered in alchemical symbols on the four sides of its base. Summarized very briefly and incompletely, Fulcanelli interprets these as derived from the Tarot deck of cards and also says the overall meaning is that every half-precession cycle (every 12,900 years) there are world-destroying disasters on Earth caused by something at the center of the galaxy. Weidner and Bridges believe the "double catastrophe" Fulcanelli says will hit the northern hemisphere will occur sometime between 1992 and 2012, but that it can be avoided in a place of refuge - a cave near Cusco, Peru. The authors reach these conclusions based on an analysis of the Latin inscription on the cross on Hendaye's monument, which contains a glaring error they think was intentional.

The authors' focus on alchemical transformation is best understood after realizing that alchemy is not so much the attempt to transmute lead into gold, but rather to (re)create a golden age. They argue that this can be accomplished only during a brief window of time (around 2012) determined by the center of our galaxy. This seems to indicate that the Mayan focus on the alignment with the galactic center and the winter solstice sun around 2012 may be very meaningful, or at least share a source of inspiration with the Hermetic traditions of Egypt. We will be lucky if the coming destruction results in a golden age.

Despite the great number of topics discussed and the meandering route taken through many secretive topics, readers seeking a greater understanding of esoteric wisdom should reach the end of the book a little wiser. As an author myself, I found hundreds of useful explanations, references, and quotes in this book - and it remains one of my favorite books on deciphering an ancient understanding of eschatology.
