Egielski (Buz, 1995, etc.) applies his paintbrush to a familiar tale--and transplants it to an urban setting--about the gingerbread boy who is too enticingly delicious to avoid pursuit, and too naive and inexperienced to recognize a foxy deception. The gingerbread boy, baked to life by the childless wife of a childless man, believes that he is such hot stuff that he immediately calls himself Gingerbread Man and dashes first to escape family life and then to elude those who would devour him. A rat, some construction workers, street musicians, and a mounted police officer join the growing crowd of pursuers. Enter the fox, who promises to bear the boy to freedom across the lake. Readers know the rest, but this bright, winning update, with its vast city backgrounds and a gingerbread boy recipe (that, unlike the story, allows the cookie to come out of the oven before it is subjected to icing) enclosed, makes the chase seem new. The urban Gingerbread Boy story

Set in New York City, Richard Egielski's version of The Gingerbread Boy is a treat for the eyes. The illustrations are richly detailed and colorful, and my 3 year old son loves this modern version. He and I talk about the characters and details, telling stories within the story. Our favorite illustration shows of a group of construction workers who pause in their work to chase that irresistible gingerbread boy. My son really loves the chase scenes, but the picture of the fox eating the gingerbread boy is a little scary. We highly recommend this version to readers 3 and up.

As a kindergarten teacher, this is a wonderful addition to my Gingerbread Man Unit. The city elements add so much fun to the gingerbread man story. The class loves the rat. I am able to extend the learning by using compare/ contrast discussions and Venn diagrams. If you are looking for a fun book to read this would fit the bill!

One of the most interesting books by T. Lobsang Rampa I have read. Without some of my own experiences I would find the book almost unbelievable. He mentions many thought provoking experiences-experienced by himself-that fosters deep thinking far removed from our present awareness in the third dimension. The myraid of experiences-both pleasant and unpleasant-endured by this one man are incredible. A very interesting book.

Probably the most revealing book of them all. I think this might have been his last book about the Lama life. It takes place in a hidden cavern high in the Himalyas with his old guide Mingyar Dundop who explains to Rampa(as a young lama) about the aliens who left this cavern eons ago. it also tells about "walk ins". If you love Rampa you must read this book!!

An excellent resource for both new and more experienced teachers

Doubtless the single greatest asset of 'Grammar For English Language Teachers' is that it helps you, as a teacher and hence a facilitator of language's meaning and form, to navigate through the oft confusing waters of English Grammar. Rather than burdening ESL teachers with yet another 'authoritative' grammar book, Parrot offers a summary of what other authors have written about a wide variety of many common grammar points, such as verb tenses and adverb classes. Should you feel that your classes' prescribed course book treats a particular grammar point inadequately, turning to 'Grammar For English Language Teachers' will help you understand what the current consensus on the matter is. Additionally, many of the grammar points under discussion have an invaluable section in which Parrot presents various common mistakes that English language learners are likely to make while using the grammar point in question.. If you have ever wondered why your students seem to instinctively dislike the formulation 'Do you do...' (hence mistakes such as 'Do you much homework usually?') or why your students are prone to saying things such as 'I can to do it', Parrot's comments will prove particularly insightful. This particular aspect of Parrot's approach to English grammar will likley be of greatest benefit to newer language teachers who are still learning the basics of their trade.

However, this book can also be of benefit to more experienced teachers as well. More experienced teachers will appreciate Parrot's refreshing treatment of the 'rules of thumb' presented in so many of the course books used in today's language classrooms. Contrary to many other grammar books, which often prescribe a few simple rules for the use of complex grammatical concepts (perhaps most infamously the oft-misunderstood Present Perfect), Parrot is often critical of many widely circulated general rules. For example, following a brief discussion on the nature of the simple past and its ostensible dependance on its 'key words' (last year, at 9 PM, yesterday, etc.), Parrot astutely points out there can also be a subjective assessment that informs the speaker's choice to use this verb tense over another. Hence why we can say 'I saw Bob at the office today', even if we understand that 'today' is still, technically speaking, in progress. Such discussions will prove to be of more benefit to teachers who have considerable experience in the classroom (2 or more years) and who can thus fully appreciate the inherent limitations of teaching learners over-generalised grammar rules. While Parrot's discussion on the shortcomings of many 'rules of thumb' may also prove to be of benefit to less experienced teachers, I would urge those who have less than 2 years experience in the field to be cautious as to when and how they present such subtleties to their students.

Everything you need in a grammar resource

As a "Pass A" student on the CELTA, I can say that this book is excellent. My CELTA center actually had it in their library and asked trainees to refer to it for assignments and lesson planning. If you are going to teach English, and teach it well, you should have access to a grammar resource that is exhaustive, and this is it. One of its strengths is that it explains common issues that ESL/EFL learners have with regards to particular aspects of grammar. So you can brush up on the past perfect continuous and then see what potential problems you may run into with your students.

It's designed to help you teach non-native speakers English, but for me it was most helpful in naming and explaining speaking/writing rules that I follow innately as a native speaker but never understood. Majid Baradar, PE, a civil and earthquake engineering consultant, worked for 18 years at the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans). He is a registered civil engineer and a licensed building general contractor. Mr. Baradar is the author also of PPI’s Seismic Design Solved Problems.

ABOUT THIS BOOK

Seismic Principles Practice Exams contains two practice exams with problems that follow the multiplechoice format and the scope of topics on the California civil seismic principles exam. Like the actual exam, each practice exam contains 55 multiple-choice problems. The problems are similar in difficulty and complexity to actual exam problems. The practice exams are designed to be taken in the same length of time as the exam (i.e., two and a half hours). To simulate the flagging function on the CBT exam, the answer sheets in this book also include a flag icon that you can use to identify the problems you want to come back to. Answer keys allow you to quickly score your exams, and complete solutions allow you to review and compare your own solving processes to identify errors and learn efficient solving approaches. Solutions and answer options are presented in customary U.S. units, with SI units provided where applicable.

This book uses the 2012 IBC and the 2010 ASCE/SEI7 when referencing code provisions in problems and solutions, unless a more stringent statutory requirement exists. (For example, Title 24 of the California Code of Regulations requires that schools and hospitals be operational after an earthquake, and this requirement supersedes lesser code requirements.) Since the 2012 IBC contains the same material and section numbers as the 2013 California Building Code (CBC), you may reference either the 2012 IBC or the 2013 CBC.

This book costs WAY TOO MUCH!!

I've read this entire book... and although the structure and presentation of the content is laid out in a cohesive and logical way, it STILL does not justify the cost of this book.
There are MANY programming books on the market, and pricing this book for more than any other programming book is ridiculous and insane!!

I do not understand how a publishing house can justify the cost of this book.

This book, without some of the errors found in it (such as pg. 409, where it suddenly tells you to open a file that you didn't create)... would be at best worth $49.99. (And even THAT amount seems high to me).

If you are forced to purchase this book through your school, then by all means stand up and complain to your school's staff. There are less expensive books on the market that offer the same content.

Had this book been at a reasonable price range, I would have given it 4 stars. However, because the price is SO EXTREMELY HIGH, I was forced to give this 1 star.

Great read for beginners

This book was used in my intro to C# class and I love it! I have taken intro to Java, Visual Basic and SQL and this is the only book that actually liked to learn from. From my experience in the classroom students who did not actually read the book had the hardest time understanding the concepts and would ask questions that, had they read, were in the text. An example would be whether interfaces have to be a separate file or if they can be within the program.

With regard to the person who gave this one star, he is correct that this is a text book. However the quality alone, makes it worth more than one star and being disgruntle about purchasing a book for one price, knowing there are others you could have purchased for less...is really your own fault for not researching. If you have never done programming and you want do to C#, you should consider this textbook before some of the more difficult to follow books on the market, despite price tags. Not all C# intro books are the same...

The only thing that I sometimes found irritating about this book was that if you do the step-by-step of some of the chapters, the smaller programs do not always work, even though there is a screen shot of the program working. The program worked at the later stages of the chapter, but the text presents it like if you build this code block and press "play" it will work and that is not always true.

I loved the "You Do It" exercises at the end of each chapter. This provided a great way for me to connect the dots from what I had just read and create a working program with the newly learned concepts. I never ran into any problems getting these examples compile and execute either.

I would recommend this book to any beginner who wants to dive into programming. In some respects knowing a little bit of Java would be helpful because the author references Java and C++ several times. I would not think that is a requirement though; you will still be able to learn and apply this knowledge easily.
