Professor Allan Walker is the Joseph Lau Chair Professor of International Educational Leadership, Head of the Department of Education Policy and Leadership and Director of The Joseph Lau Luen Hung Charitable Trust Asia Pacific Centre for Leadership and Change at The Hong Kong Institute of Education. Before moving to the Institute, he was Chair Professor of Educational Administration and Policy at The Chinese University of Hong Kong where he worked for 16 years. He also worked at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and in Universities in Australia and the United States. In 2010 he was made a Fellow of the Australian Council for Educational Leadership for his contribution to educational leadership research and development globally, but especially in South and Southeast Asia.

Topicality is never an issue where Israel and the Palestinians are concerned. The arguments--not to mention bloodshed--over Jewish and Muslim nationhood and land rights have been going on for centuries and, whatever the best intentions of the current peace process, they will probably go on for centuries to come. Both parties fanatically believe they have an inalienable historical right to statehood on the land in question and both regard Jerusalem as a holy city. As befits the disenfranchised, the Palestinians are slightly more open to a negotiated settlement, but the Israelis remain intransigent about handing over any but the most inhospitable of scrubland and the impasse remains. In the battle between the bullets and the ballot box, the bullets are winning hands-down.

Tom Segev is one of Israel's most notable historians and journalists--one of the few to strive for any sense of objectivity in his writings--so a new book by him is always worth waiting for. One Palestine, Complete is a detailed account of Palestine under British rule from 1917 to 1948, the critical period in the modern history of the region that led up to the creation of the state of Israel. Segev begins by carefully detailing Britain's well-known inconsistencies in dealing with both the Jews and the Arabs--to both of whom it had appeared to promise, if not the world, at least the country after independence was granted--and goes on to make a convincing case that because Palestine fell into the category of an emotional rather than self-interested colonial possession, the Brits hoped the situation would unwind to everyone's advantage.

Where Segev departs from the historical norm is in his assertions that whatever the British may have said to the Palestinians, their actions were uncompromisingly pro-Zionist from the start. This, he claims, was done out of the mistaken, anti-Semitic belief that the Jews controlled business and turned the wheels of history, rather than from a recognition of the rightness of their cause. Be this as it may, it is at best a partial explanation. Before World�War�II, Britain was on the verge of handing over Palestine to the Arabs, and Segev completely downplays the impact of Western war guilt over the Holocaust that led to a huge growth in support for an independent Israeli state at the expense of Palestinian rights.

"The British entered Palestine to defeat the Turks; they stayed there to keep it from the French; then they gave it to the Zionists because they loved 'the Jews' even as they loathed them, at once admired and despised them, and above all feared them. They were not guided by strategic considerations, and there was no orderly decision-making process," claims Segev in revealing the thrust of his argument that the contemporary problems between the Arabs and the Jews over the issue of a promised homeland were exacerbated by the interventions of the British empire between the two world wars. Segev, author of the well-known and highly controversial books 1949 and The Seventh Million, is one of the "new historians" who have revised and demythologized the history of modern Israel. The reason the British feared the Zionists, Segev maintains, was that they believed that the Jews had inordinate political power around the world. Moreover, he suggests that the Arab rebellions of the late 1930s were instrumental in convincing the British to leave the reins to the Jewish Agency and even hypothesizes about how the British would have reacted if the Arabs had had a political infrastructure in place similar to that of the Jews. Although his argument would be more convincing had he given greater credence to the Palestinian perspective, Segev is an excellent historical writer who presents a compelling and timely discussion of a well-trodden subjectDeven if it does not stir as much controversy as his earlier work. In the past 50 years, Arab-Israeli relations have been marked by several wars and internecine conflicts. Understanding the events in Palestine during the first half of the 20th century, which shaped the future of this conflict, is critical to understanding the contemporary obstacles confronting the Middle East peace process. Israeli journalist Segev (1949: The First Israelis) has written a detailed, evenhanded account of these events, which led to the establishment of the state of Israel and the creation of the Palestinian refugee problem. By relying on a wealth of archival material, the author demonstrates how and why the British ultimately favored the Zionist forces over the Arabs and how they helped the nascent Zionist movement defeat the Palestinians and other Arabs. Highly recommended for both academic and large public libraries.

One Palestine, Complete; is anything but complete

I read this book a few years ago, and when I finished it I didn't feel that I could write an informed review. The book really left me with a lot of questions and very few answers. When I decided to read this book I had read a lot of current events and recent histories of this area, but I had not read enough of the history of the making of this region to give myself a proper historical context with which to understand the current histories within their broader context. This particular book was my first read to rectify this lack of knowledge. After reading it though I felt that I had to have more to understand this book and this period.

Part of the problem was perspective. In reading this book I thought that Chaim Weizmann had basically single handedly and apropos of nothing went to England, and on the force of nothing more than his own personality and with a little help of English bigotry wrested the Balfour Declaration from the British government. I didn't come away with the understanding that Weizmann was a representative of a much larger group. This was the type of problem I had with the entire work. I felt like throughout the book there was something I was not getting, a perspective that was lacking.

That was the reason I was unable to review the work back when I originally read it. This book can only be read in conjunction with other works if the reader is to understand this history. I feel that other readers who come into this work without the requisite background of knowledge to understand the broader context that this work fits into will end up like me, more confused than enlightened by this book. This is the reason why I can't highly recommend this book to all readers. It isn't that this book is bad or misleading; it is just that it is anything but complete.

I would go further into the problems that I had with this book, but were it not for an excellent review by Omer Belsky that says everything I would have said just better than I could have said. So instead of going into a greater detail I would direct readers to that review.

This book has its merits, and it certainly adds to Israeli/Palestinian historiography. I would also recommend reading this book, but only once you have developed an understanding of the British Mandate period and of the Zionist organizations that men like Weizmann were working through. This work is a good contribution to the wealth of books on this period, but this work just doesn't stand on its own.

Good history

Good history and not always easy to find. The author is an Israeli who does not go along with many of the novelists of the period. The test of a good history book should be: Did you learn anything? I did.

Easy to read and understand and filled with valuable information to help you get and keep the attention of your desired audience

As the subtitle implies, Captivology is a book about capturing attention. It is a guide to understanding and implementing tips and practices that will attract and keep the attention of your desired audience.

Parr starts out by explaining why he wrote the book: “I wrote Captivology out of necessity. In my world–the world of technology and startups–attention often means the difference between success and failure. Startups need to catch the attention of busy investors. They need to secure the attention of the press to spread the word about their products. They need to captivate their users long enough to entice them to come back. Startups need to grab the attention of potential hires and keep them engaged once they join their team. Without attention, even a great startup with a compelling product will die. Attention is the fuel that drives great companies, causes, and ideas.”

With that in mind, Parr shares his considerable marketing skills in Captivology. Chapter one focuses on The Three Stages of Attention. Parr explains the difference between immediate, short, and long-term attention, and how each can be won, as well as the overall benefits. Successful marketing requires a balanced combination of all three.

In chapters two through eight, Parr spends time covering different attention triggers: automacity, framing, disruption, reward, reputation, mystery, and acknowledgement. Parr describes each trigger with scenarios to help you understand it in context, and also talks about the implications and how to apply the trigger effectively.

Captivology is clear and simple to understand. Parr conveys valuable information in a well-written, engaging style. One thing I think the book could use is a companion workbook. Captivology is filled with useful information, but it lacks a little in the area of how to use it. Granted, there is no “right way” or recipe that will work for every company, in every industry, in every instance–so expecting some sort of step-by-step guide might be unreasonable. When you finish Captivology, though, the challenge you face will be to translate it into “What does this mean for me?” and “How do I apply this information effectively?”

Captivology focuses on the science of capturing attention, and provides a solid foundation of well-researched information to back it up. Ultimately, though, marketing is also part art and part luck. It’s applying the right science in the right way at the right time. People are inundated with an overwhelming amount of data, information, and solicitations on a daily basis. You have to do whatever it takes to make your message stand out and capture the attention of audience. Captivology will help you do that.

Somewhat useful but falls short as a business book

If this were meant to actually be a science book, I would think this was an interesting book, but as the business book it aims to be, I think it falls short. The book gets more useful in its later chapters, but the beginning of the book mostly just confirms common-sense understandings of capturing attention by showing some science and examples underneath it. There isn't a lot in the first two-thirds of the book that inspired me to find unusual and compelling new ways to capture attention. For me to love a business book, it has to have serious aha moments every page or two. Instead, what I read in this book is a lot of name-dropping ("look how many important people I spoke to!") and a bit of self-puffery ("I call this concept [newly coined cutesy buzzword]"). Also, it happened enough times that I noticed, but his descriptions of women he profiled often included appreciations of their physical beauty ("raven-haired" appeared more than once), but I didn't see the same in his descriptions of men. The physical descriptions of the women bore no relationship to the wisdom they had to impart. Right now, as the wider culture is waking up to the strong disparities of the treatment of men and women in the tech industry of which he's part, it hurts to read.

Three stars because it's at least somewhat useful, but it's not a book I'm likely to return to for continued inspiration.

This is the book we have been looking for to educate us on cuts of meats. Don't settle for anything else or waste your money on other "artsy" books with a lot of fluff .... this is the book you really want if you are serious about understanding different meats. Makes you feel like you know now what true butchers know.

An easy and compelling read

An easy and compelling read, that tells he forgotten story of civilians caught up in the Revolution and the trials they endured when captured by raiding parties. It give a first have story of generally fair treatment of prisoners by Indians and the British sponsors. I was surprised to learn this aspect of history..

Captivating history

This book was a well-told account of a really fascinating piece of history. A raid on the frontier-area of Vermont ends up with captives being sent to a British prison island in Canada. You get a good feel for what was going on with the British during the war (not an angle you always hear about when it comes to the Revolutionary War) and the escape itself is really amazing (think the 1963 "The Great Escape" movie, that's what it reminded me of) and then that's only the start of their troubles as they have to find their way through the wilderness back home.

A quick read, more fast pace then I was expecting from a history book. It's not too long - a good chunk of the book is a lengthy introduction about the historical background and there's a lengthy section on the references at the end, so it's not as long as it seems by the thickness of the book.

I appreciated that this was history and not historical fiction. While the author tried to give you a feel for what it would have been like, he doesn't overdo it. He always maintains his position as historian and researcher. He uses a lot of actual quotes from journals, and makes it clear where information came from. If accounts contradict each other or if there's reason to believe someone might be exaggerating or not being honest, he'll tell you why he thinks so.

Touted as a Ball Four for the new millennium, Jose Canseco's Juiced promises to expose not only the rampant use of performance-enhancing substances in baseball (with steroids replacing the amphetamines of Bouton's day), but the painfully human flaws of its heroes as well. A steroid devotee since the age of 20, Canseco goes beyond admitting his own usage to claim that with the tacit approval of the league's powers-that-be he acted as baseball's ambassador of steroids and is therefore indirectly responsible for "saving" the game.

Chief among his claims is that he introduced Mark McGwire to steroids in 1988 and that he often injected McGwire while they were teammates. According to Canseco, steroids and human growth hormones gave McGwire and Sammy Sosa (whose own usage was "so obvious, it was a joke") the strength, stamina, regenerative ability, and confidence they needed for a record-setting home run duel often credited with restoring baseball's popularity after the 1994 strike. Although he devotes a lot of ink to McGwire, Canseco envisions himself as a kind of Johnny Steroidseed, spreading the gospel of performance enhancement, naming a number of players that he either personally introduced to steroids or is relatively certain he can identify as fellow users. In this poorly written, controversial memoir, Canseco, a one-time American League MVP, reveals himself to be an unapologetic user of performance-enhancing drugs. Canseco readily admits that he was never the most talented of athletes, and that he never really had the drive to be a star until he made a promise of greatness to his dying mother. After a year of playing some uninspired minor league ball, Canseco packed on a superhuman 25 pounds of muscle in one off-season with the help of steroids and a human growth hormone. A string of tainted baseball achievements followed-including an all-star invitation as a rookie, an MVP award and a World Series title with the Oakland A's-before his life and career unraveled. Judging from the recent BALCO case, baseball certainly does have a steroid problem. But despite the headline-grabbing claims in this book, whether Canseco really knows anything about the problem beyond his own use is questionable. Rather, what emerges is a portrait of a bitter, disgraced ex-player who so desperately wants respect that he casts his own extraordinary recklessness as perfectly commonplace, a scorched-earth attempt to raise his own legend by bringing the game-and some of its great players-down to his level. Most shocking is that Canseco remains an unabashed booster of steroids, claiming they'll one day be used safely under medical supervision to propel humans to better health and great feats. Doctors disagree, and it should be noted that doctors did not administer Canseco's steroid use. "Is it cheating," Canseco asks in a revealing moment of moral relativism, "to do what everyone wants you to do?" If that very question were asked by a little leaguer, its answer could not be more obvious.

About the Author

Jose Canseco was born in Havana, Cuba, and immigrated to Miami in the 1970s. After being drafted by the Oakland Athletics, he went on to win Rookie of the Year, the American League MVP Award, and a World Series ring. In all, he played for seven different teams and ended his baseball career with a total of 462 home runs. Today, Canseco lives a quiet life in California with his daughter, Josie.

unbelieveable at first

I read this book when it first came out and I am glad I did not review it then. Like many others I was skeptical about what Canseco was saying. I just couldn't believe that all the famous athletes that he named took steriods or HGH. The idea that he personal injected many of them seemed ludicrous. The media put it down as a bunch of lies to sell books. Canseco also had his ups and downs and did not have a great reputation in baseball. After the hearings things looked even worse. But what came out in the long run was that everything he said became highly plausible or confirmed by drug testing or further investigation. This book is now a landmark book in the history of major league baseball. The only thing I disagree with Canseco on in this book is the idea that taking steroids was good for the game of baseball even though it led to more home runs and excitement for the fans. At least in his new book based on the accumulated medical evidence he has changed his tune. No one can deny that this was one of the major books to blow the lid on the use of steriods in baseball.

I believe that Canseco wrote this book for the noteriety and the money and that his selective choice of names to name was deliberate to sensationalize the book and sell copies. He now freely admits to naming people to make the book marketable in his new book vindicated. Also I think the book was intended to provide a rationalization for his own use of steroid and for turning so many others onto it. But the Mitchell report and other investigations has confirmed that those named were really users!

He doesn't look so bad now, does he?

He wrote the truth & was called a liar. As for the book, it's easy & about a sixth grade reading level. It is obvious he didn't have a ghost, so he is to be commended on that.
The story of his life. Beyond that it is also a weapon to be used against Major League Baseball. He is bitter, about many things, among them being denied the chance to get 500 homers.
He may not be a liar now, but he did cheat by using steroids. That everyone did it is a childish excuse. He claims he could have never been a major leaguer with the body nature gave him. He tries to explain away his violent, sometimes criminal temper & aggression. Was that behavior the result of steroids?
The highlight of course was his visits to a bathroom stall with Mark McGuire, Raphael Palmerio, Miguel Tejada & others to shoot-up. He helped them do it & advised them. Despite that, I like him & his book. He has a certain style & is entertaining. But squealing on your teammates to sell books & settle old scores is dishonorable. However, this is baseball, nothing more. Congress should stay out of it. They've less integrity than MLB. They have other things to do that are more important.
Will I buy his next book? Absolutely.

For starters, Canseco's book isn't what the media hyped(s) it to be: it isn't a soap-opera version/tell-all/guess who's doing/did steriods extravaganza. It's simply Canseco's version/vision of the life he experienced & lived. He does make valid points, but the book is also an "I'm the king of the world" egocentric narrative. I believe much of what he says, but I'm also leary of a good deal of the book's content. I find it hard to believe that Canseco "revolutionized" the game of baseball. Sure, he may have changed it, but of all the greats, I don't consider anyone "revolutionary." Bottom line: a fast, intoxic read, entertaining & interesting, but would I take it as gospel, NO.
