The generic becomes TM

What makes a presentation compelling? According to the author here, it's the ability to tell a solid story and that, asserts the author, can be done in just seven slides.

I liked this book and yet, for me, I felt that the information had been presented before and done better in a couple of other titles: Beyond Bullet Points and Presenting to Win. Both of these provided clearer presentations of their own material (that is remarkably similar in some ways) than this particular book. One reason for that might have been nothing more than the text-heavy nature of this publication: it feels more weighty than the other publications and detracts from its simple message. While the publisher might have wished to estbalish this as a more serious handling of the topic, it lacks 'white space' in its own presentation.

The material here is fine: the 'story' is a natural format for presentations since we all, at heart, love conflict & resolution. If you've not read material like this before then this book will provide a good introduction. But there are other options that convey the same detail in a less textually heavy manner.

Good Idea, Poor Execution

This is two part book. Part 1, how to construct a story. Part 2, creating the slides.

Part 1 is adequate. Yes, it's best to present your data or idea in a coherent, building, story. But the text-heavy explanation of story telling is dull. The book looks like it was designed in 1998.

Part 2 is a disaster. The example slides are horrible. Every example slide is a perfect example of how NOT to design a slide.

My conclusion is that if you make slides like the ones in this book, keep the presentation to as few slides as possible. 7 may be too many.

Great for speakers

For my senior year of college we had a new university president. He liked to take a lot of the chapel time to talk about all the ways they were planning to spend our money on improvements to the school that we would never get to see. He also liked to use PowerPoint - a lot! After a few chapels, we were sick of PowerPoint.

Over the years I have been presented to with PowerPoint in a lot of different settings. Most of the time it was the same story of "blah blah blah." Too many people lean on the tool to enhance their presentation when all it does is illuminate the boredom. PowerPoint doesn't make presentations. People make presentations.

That's why I liked the premise of Paul Kelly's book The Seven Slide SolutionTM. I really found the first two sections interesting and helpful when it comes to developing a presentation using PowerPoint. Based on the way people's brains work, Kelly suggests that a presentation doesn't need to be any longer than seven slides. Anything beyond that is wasting your time and the audiences - they won't remember it. He walks you through the process of developing a story, from creating a premise to establishing conflict, adding tension, and ultimately providing a resolution to your presentation. The final section seemed to me a more hands on or reference to have handy when you are actually putting together the presentation.

Again, it wasn't exactly exciting or motivating, but I learned some good things. If you use PowerPoint very often, it might be a good book to take a look at. It's also a good refresher for putting together the basic elements of a story.

Brilliant for the novice photographer!

This is the 2nd copy I have bought of this book, my original one I lent out and do not know where it has gone.
As a beginner to photography at the time I found this book a brilliant starting point for a budding photographer with no prior experience. The book is a good balance of technical and non-technical information, with a focus more on how to make your photos pleasing and expressing your own tastes then on how to take a technically correct photo.
Although it would not be so helpful to the experienced or intermediate photographer it is a good starting point for those that want something simple and easy to read, with good illustration of techniques and still want to know a bit more detail behind how it all works without being bored to death.

I just love this book! It is quite easy to understand but not in a way you feel it's being pedantic. It gets to the point quickly and is very well layed out and displayed. I haven't finished it yet but I do love the tasks that get me to focus and put in to practice what is being taught.

About the Author
Rick Daniels, R.N., Col. (ret.), Ph.D., administers clinical practicum courses in acute and critical care nursing. Currently an associate professor at Oregon Health and Science University, School of Nursing, Daniels has taught nursing in associate, baccalaureate, and graduate schools, as well as R.N. degree completion programs. He has also taught many adult health and illness seminars and has presented at numerous national organizations, including forums for nurse educators. Throughout his accomplished career as an educator, Daniels has kept his clinical practice current as a Colonel in the United States Army, Army Reserves, and National Guard, retiring in August 2012 after 28 years of service. An active researcher, Daniels has received four successive fundings with the Department of the Army to implement health promotion programs with National Guardsmen. The author of multiple textbooks, he also publishes in nursing journals and holds membership in numerous professional nursing organizations, including Sigma Theta Tau and the American Nurses Association. Daniels obtained his bachelor of science degree in nursing from the University of Oregon Nursing School, his master of science degree in nursing from the University of San Diego, and his doctor of philosophy degree in nursing from the University of Texas in Austin.

Loved it!

A book with BDSM, pirates and an adventure, how could I resist this?

I've seen this book placed in some retailers as erotic, but I think calling it that does it a disservice. This book is much more than erotica, and while sex does feature heavily, it is more about the relationships and emotional aspects than the physical ones.

Jon is an empath and lives in a run down castle with his stepfather, Reginald, head of the castle guards. Reginald uses Jon's skills on the prisoners in the dungeons to decide who is guilty or innocent. His skills reach the ear of a pirate captain, who decides Jon might just be what he's looking for to keep him one step ahead of the other pirates. For who would try to cheat him if they knew Jon could tell they were lying?

Investigating a murder at the town's brothel, Jon is kidnapped by the pirates and brought on board. Jon doesn't know it, but the reader does, Jon has little choice. Either he joins the pirate band or they kill him, simple as that. It would have been a short book if our hero was murdered in the first few chapters, so the readers can almost guess he'll pick joining the pirates.

I loved this book and I loved Jon. He was an innocent virgin before he joined Captain Baltsaros and his crew, and his confusion over feeling these things for a man was well done, without the book being completely unrealistic. But hey, I'm reading about fantasy pirates, I'm not really worried about realism here :)

As for Baltsaros, for a lot of the book he wasn't a particlularly nice character, but he was a compelling one and I could see how Jon could be drawn to him despite his misgivings at first. Throw in Tom, the jealous first mate and you have the start of an intriguing love triangle and eventual threesome, which I'm not usually a fan off, but it works well for these characters.

All the characters were well-rounded and I adored Katherine, the only woman on the ship who became a sort of older sister to Jon.

Watching Jon blossom from shy virgin into a young man comfortable in his sexuality was wonderful, you almost got to take the journey with him. There is some BDSM in the book, but the scenes are more than just kinky sex, they develop the emotional connection between the characters and the reader gets to see Jon experience sub-space, which a lot of BDSM book just don't do at all or gloss over it. The love scenes are very well-writen (as is the whole book), very sensual and emotionally charged, they sizzle.

There is a good balance of sex, action, mystery, intrigue and jealousy and it makes for a very satisfying read.

If you like your pirates for what they are - rough men who think nothing about murder, kidnapping, stealing, then this might be the book for you. They are also very sexy in here, despite the moral hinterlands they inhabit. A fantastic, sexy read.

Rich and intriguing - Huzzah!

I read this on a flight from DC to Phoenix. I was completely absorbed in it. The characters were rich, mysterious, fallible, and real. No shying away from a bit of controversy and some kinks not perhaps held by all. While this book has BDSM it is not about it at all. No BDSM 101 here. It's all about personalities and circumstances and what happens when you discover what you thought is not what is. There is evil here - and it comes from places perhaps you won't expect. There is redemption of a sorts - there is great drama that hooks you in and just propels you forward. It's not a romance - but it sorta is. I think that's what so cool about it. You delve deep here - in what things people are capable of but it's not overly gritty. Matter of factual more.

It's a great length - bit of swashbuckling and even great female characters who get some "screen time". I'm not usually much for historicals but this is a very meaty book with a lot going on. The writing really shines - very smooth, great structure, and the erotic parts are erotic but this is not even close to too much sex not enough action. There is plenty of both here to satisfy anyone.

Deliciously Erotic & Wonderfully Engaging

I have to say that right from the start "Caged: Love and Treachery on the High Seas" caught my attention with its vivid storytelling, sucking me into the complicated love story that Jon finds himself living as he is caught between two men and the dangerous life that pulls them all together. The story is lush, seductive, erotic, exciting, emotionally charged and incredibly well written. It has a sharp and provocative tone that just makes you feel as if you're taking the journey right alongside Jon as he is twisted, turned and tumbled... in the middle of an epic struggle for love, for possession, for lust and for power. The writing is fast-paced and vibrant with imagery, painting each scene with a fine tipped brush and bringing it to life in a thrilling and alluring way. The novel left me breathless and eager for more, like any good novel should, so I can say with confidence that this was definitely worth the read.
